Chukwuemeka Victor Amachukwu was extradited from France to the United States on August 4, 2025, to face federal charges in the Southern District of New York. Prosecutors allege he and other conspirators used spearphishing to break into U.S. tax-preparation businesses and steal customers’ personal and tax information. The charges are accusations; the cited announcement does not establish a later plea, verdict, or sentence.
Who was extradited, and where is the case?
The defendant is Chukwuemeka Victor Amachukwu. The U.S. Department of Justice said he was arrested in France at the request of the United States and extradited on August 4, 2025. He appeared in federal court the following day in the Southern District of New York, before a case assigned to U.S. District Judge Paul G. Gardephe. DOJ announcement, August 5, 2025.
What do prosecutors allege?
Intrusions into tax-preparation businesses
According to the DOJ, beginning in or around 2019, Amachukwu, named co-conspirator Kinglsey Uchelue Utulu, and other Nigeria-based conspirators allegedly sent spearphishing emails to gain access to U.S. tax-preparation businesses, including firms in New York, Texas, and other states. Prosecutors say they took customers’ tax and other identifying information and used the identities of thousands of people to file fraudulent federal and state tax returns.

DOJ reported in 2025 that the alleged scheme sought approximately $8.4 million in fraudulent tax refunds, of which approximately $2.5 million was obtained. It also reported approximately $819,000 in additional alleged fraudulent payouts through the Small Business Administration’s Economic Injury Disaster Loan program. These are figures DOJ attributed to the prosecution’s allegations, not findings of guilt.

A separate alleged investment scheme
The same DOJ release describes a separate alleged investment-fraud scheme. Amachukwu allegedly offered victims purportedly valuable standby letters of credit that did not exist and kept millions of dollars. The release does not establish that allegation as fact.
What charges and possible penalties were announced?
The August 2025 announcement listed one count of conspiracy to commit computer intrusions, two counts of conspiracy to commit wire fraud, two counts of wire fraud, and aggravated identity theft. DOJ said the computer-intrusion conspiracy carried a possible maximum of five years, each wire-fraud conspiracy count a possible maximum of 20 years, and aggravated identity theft a mandatory consecutive two-year sentence. These are potential statutory penalties described by DOJ, not a prediction of a sentence; the judge determines any sentence.
What is the case’s current status?
The cited DOJ announcement establishes the extradition, court appearance, and charges as of August 5, 2025. It does not establish a later plea, verdict, or sentence for Amachukwu. The DOJ release also stresses that the charges are accusations and that he is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
Don’t confuse this case with Matthew Akande’s Massachusetts prosecution
A separate prosecution involved Matthew A. Akande in the District of Massachusetts. DOJ reported that Akande was extradited from the United Kingdom on March 5, 2025, in a case involving alleged phishing and remote-access Trojan malware used to steal tax-firm client data. DOJ later reported that Akande was sentenced to eight years in prison and ordered to pay $1,393,230 in restitution on February 18, 2026. That sentence belongs to Akande, not Amachukwu.
