Nifty 50 is a broad, multi-sector benchmark for Indian equities; Nifty Bank tracks listed Indian banking stocks. Both use free-float market-cap weighting, but they answer different questions: one gives a wider market signal, while the other isolates a single sector.
What does each index measure?
Nifty 50: a broad-market signal
NSE Indices describes Nifty 50 as a diversified index of 50 companies across important sectors, intended to represent overall market conditions. Its free-float market-cap weighting took effect on June 26, 2009. NSE Indices reported that the index represented 53.73% of the free-float market capitalization of NSE-listed stocks as of March 30, 2026; that is a dated measurement, not a live figure. Nifty Bank: a banking-sector signal
NSE Indices describes Nifty Bank as an index of liquid, large-capitalization Indian banking stocks and a benchmark for the capital-market performance of Indian banks. Its April 30, 2026 factsheet allows a maximum of 14 companies and says preference is given to companies permitted to trade in the futures and options segment. What does free-float market-cap weighting mean?
In both indices, companies’ weights are based on their free-float market capitalization—the value of shares considered available for public trading—rather than each constituent receiving an equal share. As a result, larger eligible free-float market values have more influence on index movements. Neither index is equal-weighted.
Which index should you use to understand the market?
- For a broad Indian equity benchmark: Nifty 50 covers multiple sectors, so it is the more relevant of these two for a cross-sector market signal.
- For listed-bank performance: Nifty Bank is the sector-specific reference. Its narrower remit means it may move differently from a broad-market index.
- For an investment decision: the index name alone does not establish whether an investment is suitable for you. Your goals, risk tolerance, time horizon, and the specific product matter.
Is an index the same as an ETF or index fund?
No. An index is a benchmark—a rule-based measure of a group of securities—not an investment you buy directly. An ETF or index fund is a separate investible product that aims to track or reference an index. NSE Indices describes ETFs and index funds as uses of Nifty 50 and lists ETF and domestic index-fund issuers for Nifty Bank. Product availability and terms belong to the individual fund or ETF, not to the index itself.
