NHTSA’s two-year preliminary evaluation of reported fires involving certain Jeep Wrangler and Gladiator vehicles was reported closed in late September 2026. That does not mean the vehicles have all been repaired or that the recall is over: Chrysler’s separate recall, 26V363, covers an estimated 1,076,999 model-year 2021–2025 vehicles. Owners should check their vehicle identification number (VIN) and follow the recall instructions if their Jeep is affected.
What NHTSA’s investigation closure means
NHTSA opened preliminary evaluation PE24-024 on September 6, 2024, to examine allegations of underhood fires in certain 2021–2023 Jeep Wranglers and Gladiators. Its opening resume estimated that 781,459 vehicles were in the investigation’s scope. News coverage reported in late September 2026 that the agency had closed the evaluation and would continue monitoring. The official recall filing documents the recall and its chronology, but the closing resume and the agency’s full rationale were not available in the sources cited here. Closure should not be read as confirmation that every affected vehicle has been repaired or that the fire risk has disappeared.
The investigation and the later recall are different in scope. Chrysler’s June 2026 recall report identified 1,076,999 potentially involved model-year 2021–2025 vehicles. The larger recall population does not change the original investigation estimate; the figures refer to different actions and vehicle populations.
| Action | Vehicles and count | What the figure describes |
|---|---|---|
| NHTSA preliminary evaluation PE24-024, opened September 6, 2024 | 2021–2023 Wranglers and Gladiators; estimated 781,459 vehicles | The estimated scope stated in NHTSA’s opening resume. |
| Chrysler recall 26V363, submitted June 4, 2026 | 2021–2025 Wranglers and Gladiators; 1,076,999 potentially involved vehicles | The recall population reported by Chrysler: 787,887 Wranglers and 289,112 Gladiators. |
What is the Jeep fire risk in recall 26V363?
The recall concerns the electrical connection for the electric hydraulic power steering pump (EHPSP). Chrysler says the connection may develop high resistance, which can overheat nearby combustible material and potentially cause a fire. Its report states, “Overheating of combustible materials in the vehicle or surrounding area may potentially lead to a fire.” The manufacturer’s chronology says tolerance and terminal-position issues could make the connection more vulnerable to high resistance, and that a loose connection could melt.
#1 Best Overall
- 【Stable Fixation】: The fire extinguisher holder can be used to solve the problem of placing the fire extinguisher nowhere in the car and sliding everywhere. It can firmly fix the fire extinguisher and prevent the fire extinguisher from rolling under the seat, which may affect driving mood and safety
- 【Professional Design】: The stand features a full cloth covered roller bar with 3 nylon reinforcement straps. The tie at the bottom can prevent the fire extinguisher from falling and can also provide stronger and better grip when off-road
- 【Stylish & Durable】: This fire extinguisher strap is made from high-quality nylon. The webbing is thick, abrasion-resistant, slip-resistant, and built to last. It features a U.S. flag design, giving it a stylish and modern look. We also offer fire extinguisher straps without any patterns to cater to different users' aesthetic and practical needs
- 【Easy to Use】: This fire extinguisher holder uses a sticky opening and closing method, which has good stickiness and makes it easy for you to place and take the fire extinguisher. Additionally, this fastening strap is washable and can be removed for cleaning if becoming dirty
- 【Wide Application】: This holder's elastic straps are adjustable and can accommodate a standard 3-pound or any similar size fire extinguisher. It can be installed anywhere on the roll cage of vehicles such as Wrangler, JK, JKU, TJ, CJ, Gladiator and more
Some drivers may experience loss of power steering assist or see a “Service Power Steering” diagnostic trouble code. The recall report does not say that every affected vehicle will display a warning, so the absence of a warning does not establish that a Jeep is unaffected.
Which Jeep models and production dates are included?
Chrysler’s recall report lists potentially involved model-year 2021–2025 vehicles. Its stated production ranges begin June 24, 2020, for Wrangler and August 18, 2020, for Gladiator; both ranges end December 2, 2024. These ranges describe potentially involved production, not a guarantee that every vehicle built during them is subject to an unrepaired recall. Use the VIN lookup to determine a specific vehicle’s status.

How to check whether your Jeep has an unrepaired recall
- Find the vehicle’s 17-character VIN. It is commonly shown on the driver-side dashboard near the windshield and on vehicle paperwork.
- Open NHTSA’s recall lookup and enter the VIN.
- Review the result for an unrepaired recall, including recall 26V363. NHTSA says a clear result displays: “0 unrepaired recalls associated with this VIN.”
- If the recall appears, contact a local Jeep dealer to arrange the recall inspection and remedy. Ask the dealer about parts and scheduling for the specific vehicle.
- If no unrepaired recall appears but the vehicle may be in the affected model years, check again later. NHTSA notes that VINs for newly announced recalls may be added continuously. Follow any safety guidance that applies to the vehicle in the meantime.
What should owners do while waiting for the recall remedy?
Chrysler advises owners to park affected vehicles away from structures or other vehicles until the remedy is obtained. The remedy is a recall inspection and repair or replacement of affected parts as necessary. A warning message is not a prerequisite to getting the vehicle checked, and owner-installed equipment does not substitute for the recall service.

What the reported incident figures do—and do not—show
In its 2026 recall report, Chrysler estimated that 0.1% of the potentially involved vehicles had the defect. As of May 18, 2026, the company reported across all markets 63 customer assistance records, 72 field reports (35 confirmed as originating at the EHPSP interface), 12 other service records, no known accidents, and one potentially related injury. These are manufacturer-reported figures, not an independently measured rate or an estimate of an individual owner’s risk.
