This is a historical guide to the completed 2021–22 NHL season, not a description of today’s streaming lineup. In the United States, ESPN+ carried more than 1,000 regular-season out-of-market games, but local and national broadcasts were handled separately and blackouts applied. No single service provided every game live to every viewer. International availability depended on country.
How U.S. NHL streaming worked in 2021–22
The season’s U.S. coverage combined an out-of-market streaming package with exclusive national games and games shown through national or local television outlets. Which option worked depended on the game and the viewer’s location.
| Game or coverage type | 2021–22 U.S. option | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Regular-season out-of-market games | ESPN+ | The NHL said more than 1,000 regular-season out-of-market games were available exclusively with an ESPN+ subscription; local blackout rules applied. NHL rights announcement |
| Exclusive ESPN-produced regular-season games | ESPN+ and Hulu | ESPN announced 75 exclusive games for the season. ESPN season overview |
| Other exclusive regular-season games | ESPN and ABC | ESPN announced 28 exclusive regular-season games on these networks. ESPN season overview |
| Other national or local broadcasts | National networks and local-market outlets | The NHL’s national schedule included Disney and Turner Sports, while local broadcasts remained a separate part of coverage. A complete team-by-team local channel directory for the season is not established here. NHL rights announcement |
The Walt Disney Company’s 2021 announcement described a 103-game national package across ESPN, ESPN+, Hulu, and ABC. That package figure is not the same as a promise that all NHL games were available on those services. Disney announcement

How to check where a specific game was available
- Identify the game and your location. An out-of-market game could be part of ESPN+ coverage; a game involving a local team could be blacked out there.
- Check the season-specific national listing. For ESPN- or ABC-exclusive games, use the applicable network listing rather than assuming the out-of-market package covered the game.
- Check the team’s local broadcast listing. Local-market games were a separate component of coverage. The available season announcements do not provide a complete local-channel directory, so confirm the outlet for the team and date.
- Confirm the service’s terms for your location. ESPN’s October 4, 2021 overview said: “All Out-of-Market games will be subject to local blackout rules.” ESPN press-room overview
Could ESPN+ show out-of-market games live?
Yes. ESPN+ carried more than 1,000 regular-season out-of-market games in the United States during 2021–22 as part of the NHL–ESPN arrangement. “Out of market” did not mean “available without restriction”: local blackout rules applied, and national exclusives could be carried elsewhere. Check the listing for the particular game and location before relying on ESPN+ for live access.

What viewers outside the United States needed to know
Disney and ESPN announced NHL distribution in 109 countries beginning in 2021–22. That number does not establish one worldwide subscription, identical service names, or identical blackout rules. The available announcement does not identify every country’s provider, package, or terms, so viewers needed to check the rights and service offered in their own country. Disney and ESPN international distribution announcement
Why a game could be blacked out
Blackouts were part of the 2021–22 ESPN+ out-of-market rules. A streaming subscription therefore did not guarantee live access when a game was restricted in the viewer’s area or assigned to a national broadcast. Use the applicable broadcast listing and service terms; the evidence for this historical guide does not establish VPN use as an authorized way to bypass restrictions.

Do not confuse 2021–22 coverage with today’s options
The 2021 season announcements describe the historical package. The NHL’s current How to Watch & Stream NHL Games page lists later arrangements, so it should not be read as a directory of 2021–22 services.
Likewise, the NHL’s currently published terms say live availability can be restricted when a viewer is in a team’s local telecast territory or a game is televised nationally in that area. They also say full-length replays of blacked-out games are typically available no later than 24 hours after the game. Those are current terms, not verified 2021–22 replay rules.
