National Green Tribunal (NGT) Chairperson Justice Prakash Shrivastava visited the Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose Indian Botanic Garden in Howrah district on October 3, 2026, and joined a tree-planting drive, according to reports by Indmedia News and Hindustan Times. The drive took place in the garden’s Endemic and Threatened Plant Section under the “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” campaign and was associated with “Swachhata Hi Seva 2026.”
What happened at the garden
The October 3, 2026 report says Shrivastava took part in the plantation drive during a visit to the garden, which is in Howrah district, West Bengal. Hindustan Times also reported the central event and identified the campaign; details about the programme and attendees below are reported by Indmedia News.
Indmedia named three other NGT officials as attendees: Registrar Deepto Ghosh, Deputy Registrar Tanushree Dutta and Assistant Registrar Yash Kumar Singh. It described “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” as encouraging people to plant trees as a tribute to their mothers while promoting environmental conservation and community participation.

Indmedia described the garden as covering about 273 acres along the Hooghly River and housing more than 12,000 living plants, including endemic and threatened plants, rare orchids, giant Amazon water lilies and varieties of palms. The report also said the Great Banyan Tree’s canopy covers nearly five acres. These are figures from Indmedia’s account; they are not independently confirmed by the two reports cited here.

What the reports do not establish
The accounts do not state how many saplings were planted, identify the species planted, or report survival rates or environmental outcomes. Neither supplies a named speaker’s direct quotation about the event. The reported figures and programme details should therefore be read as Indmedia’s account, while Hindustan Times independently supports the core report of Shrivastava’s visit and the campaign identification.
