A route missing from the build output is not necessarily a route Next.js ignored. In the App Router, generateStaticParams supplies paths for build-time prerendering; depending on the route configuration, paths it does not supply may still be handled on demand. Without the project’s Next.js version, code, and build output, the reported 1,200 pages do not establish a root cause. The right first step is to distinguish pages that were not prerendered from pages that are not reachable.

What “generated pages” means in the App Router

A dynamic route uses a bracketed folder, such as app/blog/[slug]/page.tsx. The bracket name is a parameter: here, slug. The route can represent many URLs, but that does not mean every possible URL is emitted as a separate static file.

generateStaticParams returns an array of objects whose keys match the dynamic segment names and whose values supply the segment values. For example, for app/blog/[slug]/page.tsx, entries have the shape { slug: 'hello-world' }. Catch-all segments use arrays for their values. See the Next.js generateStaticParams reference and dynamic route conventions.

That function is a build-time input, not a promise that every route represented by the pattern will become a static artifact. The Next.js documentation says, “During next build, generateStaticParams runs before the corresponding Layouts or Pages are generated.”

Check whether the paths were omitted or are actually unreachable

Two separate questions matter: which paths were prerendered during the build, and what happens when a user requests a path that was not in the generated list. The route’s dynamicParams setting affects the second question. In the documented behavior, true allows omitted paths to be handled on demand; false makes paths not returned by generateStaticParams return a 404. Consult the Next.js 15 Route Segment Config reference only if the project is using Next.js 15; route-segment behavior can be version-sensitive.

Configuration and path Build-time result Request behavior
Path is returned by generateStaticParams Supplied for prerendering during the build. Served according to the application’s route and deployment configuration.
Path is not returned; dynamicParams is true Not supplied for build-time prerendering by that function. May be handled on demand.
Path is not returned; dynamicParams is false Not supplied for build-time prerendering by that function. Returns a 404.

Consequently, an absent build artifact alone does not prove that a route is broken. Test an omitted URL in the deployed application and compare its response with the route’s configuration. The version-appropriate documentation is essential: the cited segment-config page describes Next.js 15, not every release.

Trace the route segments and generated values

  1. Record the project’s Next.js version and relevant modes. Check whether Cache Components or output: 'export' is enabled; both affect how to interpret generation or build output.
  2. Write down the route path segment by segment. For a route such as app/[category]/[slug]/page.tsx, the dynamic names are category and slug.
  3. Compare every returned object with those names. Confirm keys match the dynamic segments and values have the required shape. For a catch-all segment, use an array rather than a single string.
  4. Inspect the data feeding the function during the build. Log or otherwise verify the returned count and representative values. Check the project’s pagination, filters, and build-time environment data; any of these could affect what the function returns, but the available facts do not establish that one did so in this case.
  5. For nested dynamic routes, identify which function fills which segment. A parent layout or page can provide values available at its level; child generation runs in relation to parent parameter sets. Do not assume that a function at one level supplies every segment in the full route.

The generateStaticParams documentation covers nested generation and the timing of the function. Its output is not regenerated by ISR revalidation: revalidation does not call generateStaticParams again. If a route list is expected to change, do not treat ISR as a mechanism that refreshes that list.

Read the build output for the configured output mode

Next.js reports distinct output categories, including App pages, App routes, prerenders, and static files. Which category matters depends on the application’s output mode. In particular, when static export is enabled, the Next.js output types reference says the route arrays are empty while staticFiles is populated. An empty route category in that mode is therefore not, by itself, evidence that pages were skipped.

Match the build report to the actual deployment mode, then inspect the relevant generated files or deployed URLs. The build summary and the application’s runtime behavior answer different questions: one indicates what was emitted, while the other shows whether a requested route can be served.

Account for Cache Components

If Cache Components are enabled, generateStaticParams cannot return an empty array: build-time validation needs sample parameters. Check the applicable Next.js empty generateStaticParams guidance and the project’s version before interpreting an empty result as a routine configuration. The exact applicability is version-dependent.

What can be concluded about the reported 1,200 pages

The reported count is an account of the project’s experience, not an independently verified Next.js statistic. With no project source, version, build log, or output artifact, there is not enough evidence to name a cause—or to say the framework silently ignored those pages. A defensible diagnosis needs the actual values returned during the build, the route’s segment structure and configuration, and output interpreted for the project’s deployment mode.
