Kayrasaurus changliensis had the imposing claws and small, beaked head associated with therizinosaurs, but its crowded teeth point researchers toward a less frightening conclusion: it was probably a plant eater. That is an inference from its anatomy, not proof of what it ate at any particular moment.
Would Kayrasaurus eat you?
Probably not. Paleontologists infer that Kayrasaurus changliensis was likely herbivorous from its jaw and unusually numerous, closely packed teeth. The fossil does not preserve direct evidence of a meal, so the conclusion is a reasoned interpretation rather than a record of its behavior. Nautilus explains the diet inference.
What makes this dinosaur look so intimidating?
Therizinosaurs are known for long hand claws and small, beaked heads—features that can make them look more threatening than a likely plant-based diet suggests. Kayrasaurus adds an unusual dental feature to that striking silhouette: its jaws held a remarkable number of tightly packed teeth.
What did the fossil reveal?
The 2026 description is based on specimen IVPP V 18597, a nearly complete but skeletally immature skeleton recovered near Beipiao City in Liaoning Province, China. It comes from the Lower Cretaceous Yixian Formation. The paper reports more than 32 teeth on each maxilla (the upper jaw) and more than 45 on each dentary (the lower jaw), at a density exceeding 3.5–4 teeth per centimetre. These counts help distinguish the animal and underpin the interpretation of its diet. The 2026 paper in the Journal of Systematic Palaeontology provides the specimen description and tooth counts.

How large was Kayrasaurus?
The paper says Kayrasaurus was at least 1.6 times larger than the second-largest contemporaneous Jehol therizinosaur, Beipiaosaurus inexpectus. Nautilus reports an estimated length exceeding 11.8 feet and a mass of up to 604 pounds. Those absolute figures are estimates reported by Nautilus, not direct measurements of a fully grown animal; the known skeleton was skeletally immature. Nautilus reports the length and mass estimates.
Where does it fit in the dinosaur family tree?
The study places Kayrasaurus on an early branch of the therizinosaurian family tree. Its strict-consensus analysis places it between Jianchangosaurus yixianensis and Beipiaosaurus inexpectus, but the authors report generally low bootstrap support. That means the precise position is uncertain, even though the analysis supports treating it as an early-branching therizinosaurian. The paper details the phylogenetic analysis.

What we can—and cannot—conclude
- Supported by anatomy: Its teeth were numerous and densely arranged, and researchers infer a likely plant-eating diet from the jaw and teeth.
- Estimated, not settled adult dimensions: The absolute length and mass figures are Nautilus estimates for an animal known from an immature skeleton.
- Uncertain evolutionary detail: The study proposes an early-branching position, but reports weak support for the exact placement.
