A car struck Newcastle Knights supporters gathered for the team’s grand final send-off in Wallsend at about 9:30am on Saturday, 3 October 2026. ABC News reported that 10 people were taken to hospital; a five-year-old girl and a 67-year-old man were in critical condition, while eight others were stable at the time of its report.
What happened at the Knights send-off?
Supporters had gathered along the route in Wallsend to farewell the Newcastle Knights before the team travelled to Sydney for Sunday’s NRL grand final. Emergency services responded at about 9:30am to reports of multiple people struck near the Transfield Drive roundabout, according to ABC News.
The Knights’ bus diverted from its planned route after the crash, ABC reported. The report also said three emergency-services helicopters and 15 ambulances attended; those are response figures, not a measure of how seriously people were injured.
