Swaddling may calm some babies, but it does not reduce the risk of SIDS, and no nursery color, print, fabric or brand has been shown to make a swaddle more comfortable or safer than another. Whether swaddling is safe for your baby depends on how you do it and where your baby sleeps. Use a lightweight, non-weighted wrap, keep it snug at the chest with room at the hips and knees, always place your baby on the back to sleep, and stop as soon as your baby shows signs of rolling.
Is swaddling safe for my baby?
Swaddling is wrapping an infant snugly in a light blanket. For some babies it helps them settle, and parents may reasonably choose it for that reason. It is a comfort choice, not a safety measure. The American Academy of Pediatrics is direct on this point in its 2022 policy statement on sleep-related infant deaths: “There is no evidence to recommend swaddling as a strategy to reduce the risk of SIDS.”
Swaddling is therefore acceptable only when three conditions are met at the same time. The wrap must be lightweight and non-weighted. It must not restrict the hips and knees. And the baby must be placed on the back for every sleep. A swaddled baby who is placed or rolls onto the stomach faces a high risk of death, so the back-sleep rule is not optional.

The phrase “ultimate comfort and security” is marketing language. Official guidance says swaddling may calm some infants, but it does not say a particular blanket provides more comfort or security than another. The guidance does not rank swaddle blankets, and no comparative testing establishes that a boys’ nursery style, a blue or other boy-themed print, a muslin or cotton fabric, or a named brand is safer or more comfortable. Choose a blanket on the features that matter for safety: weight, fit, and whether it can be used the way the manufacturer’s instructions describe.

When to stop swaddling
Stop swaddling as soon as your baby shows signs of trying to roll over. This can happen before the age range often quoted in parenting advice, so do not wait for a calendar milestone. Once your baby can roll, a wrap can restrict the arms and make it harder to move out of a risky position, which is why the rolling sign, not the baby’s age, is the trigger to stop.

No product in this table has been shown to be the best choice. The distinctions are about how the wrap is built and whether it is weighted, not about which brand performs better. A swaddle or sleep product does not replace safe-sleep practices or lower the risk of SIDS.

- Choose a lightweight, non-weighted blanket or commercial swaddle sack, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for size and use.
- Wrap the baby snugly around the chest, leaving ample room at the hips and knees so the legs can move and bend.
- Place the baby on the back for every sleep. Do not swaddle a baby who is to be placed on the stomach or side.
- Stop swaddling at the first sign of attempted rolling, even if the baby is younger than the often-quoted age range.
- Do not add weighted swaddle clothing or weighted objects. The CDC’s “Helping Babies Sleep Safely” guidance supports keeping the sleep space free of objects that could add weight or pressure.
- Keep the sleep space clear. The CPSC says the crib or bassinet should contain only a fitted sheet. A loose swaddling blanket can cover the baby’s face, so do not leave one in the sleep space.

Nursery look versus safe use
A boys’ nursery theme can coordinate with a swaddle, but the look of a blanket does not change how it performs. Color, print, and fabric are matters of taste. Before buying, check the label for weight, size range, and the manufacturer’s instructions for use. If a product is weighted, do not use it for swaddling, however well it matches the room.
