The headline “Beware Of Expensive Legacy Stocks With No Moat” is from a Seeking Alpha analysis by contributor Gary Alexander—not from The New York Times newspaper or The New York Times Company. Alexander’s bearish view is an opinion, and the information visible in the article summary is not enough to establish that NYT stock is expensive or that the company lacks a durable competitive advantage.

What the bearish article argues

Alexander says he downgraded The New York Times Company (NYSE: NYT) to Sell because of valuation and risks facing legacy media. The summary reports a valuation of 25.9 times FY26 earnings, and identifies four operating concerns:

  • Growth in digital subscriptions and advertising is slowing.
  • Subscriber additions increasingly rely on promotional rates, which could put pressure on retention and average revenue per user.
  • Operating margins are flat while newsroom costs rise.
  • Q3 guidance points to further deceleration.

These are claims presented in Alexander’s article summary, not independently confirmed company results here. Its accessible summary does not provide the supporting calculations or enough detail to assess the subscriber, advertising, cost, margin, or guidance claims.

Is The New York Times stock expensive?

The 25.9x FY26 P/E figure is the valuation reported in the article summary. The summary does not state the date of that estimate or the inputs used to calculate it, so it should not be treated as a current market multiple or a verified valuation. A forward P/E also depends on forecast earnings: a high multiple may look different if earnings grow, while weaker-than-expected earnings can make a stock more expensive than the headline ratio suggests.

  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

To evaluate the valuation, compare it with the company’s dated financial disclosures and a clearly defined peer group. Make sure the earnings period and valuation date match, and examine whether expected earnings growth supports the multiple. The available summary does not provide enough comparable figures to make that assessment.

Does The New York Times have a durable competitive advantage?

“No moat” is the headline’s thesis, not a conclusion established by the visible evidence. The summary does not assess the company’s brand, pricing power, subscriber retention, switching costs, or returns on capital. Without evidence on those factors, it is not possible to determine whether the company has a durable competitive advantage—or how strong it might be.

The reported concern about promotional subscriber additions raises a relevant question: are discounts bringing in readers who remain at full price, or mainly producing short-lived growth? Answering that requires dated data on additions, churn or retention, and average revenue per user. The summary supplies no figures for those measures.
