A used SSD can be a reasonable purchase, but its age or a “healthy” label cannot tell you how long it will keep working. Check the exact model, interface, model-specific wear and SMART data, and applicable warranty terms before buying. Treat a health report as useful evidence—not a guarantee—and keep backups whatever the drive reports.

How long does an SSD last?

There is no reliable universal lifespan in calendar years for a used SSD. Kingston describes endurance in terabytes written (TBW), with rated endurance varying by capacity; TBW is a write-endurance rating, not a countdown clock or a promise that a drive will fail at that point. The exact model, its use, and its present condition all matter. Kingston explains SSD endurance and TBW.

SSD controllers use wear leveling to distribute writes across flash memory cells. That helps explain why age alone is a poor measure of remaining life, but it does not make a particular drive’s future reliability predictable. Kingston describes this technique in its wear-leveling overview. The manufacturer material cited here does not establish an average lifespan or failure rate for used SSDs.

How to check a used SSD before buying

  1. Get the exact model and interface. Ask for the full model number, capacity, and whether the drive is SATA or PCIe/NVMe. Confirm that the interface and physical form factor fit your system.
  2. Ask for a SMART report from a suitable tool. Request a screenshot or report that identifies the drive and shows its health status, wear indicator, warnings or failures, and any usage data the tool exposes.
  3. Use the manufacturer’s interpretation. Where possible, check the manufacturer’s software or documentation for that exact model. SMART attributes and wear indicators are not interpreted identically across manufacturers and interfaces.
  4. Verify the report yourself when practical. If you can connect the drive before purchase, read its SMART data directly with an appropriate tool. A seller’s report is helpful evidence, not proof of future reliability.
  5. Check warranty terms for the exact product and region. Confirm the remaining term, any wear threshold, proof-of-purchase requirements, and whether coverage applies to a secondhand buyer.

SMART data is used to monitor drive health and provide warnings, but it cannot guarantee that a drive will not fail. Keep a separate backup of important data.

How to interpret SSD wear readings

Start with the indicator that applies to the drive, not a generic percentage or rule of thumb. Solidigm identifies Media Wearout Indicator for SATA drives and Percentage Used for PCIe/NVMe drives in its SMART attribute guidance. The labels and direction of the values differ: a SATA indicator may count down toward a limit, while NVMe Percentage Used rises toward its threshold. Do not apply one maker’s scale or threshold to another drive.

For supported Kingston SSDs, Kingston SSD Manager describes its wear indicator as remaining write endurance. Kingston’s user guide says: “It is advisable to make a backup of your data and discontinue usage of any drive that has reached an SSD Wear Indicator value of 1% or less.” That is Kingston’s guidance for its tool and supported drives; it is not a universal threshold for all SSDs. See the Kingston SSD Manager guide and support information.

Warranty limits are a separate matter from a general health label. Kingston’s warranty documentation describes coverage ending when a time limit or wear threshold is reached, whichever applies first, with terms varying by product and warranty category. Check the exact model and applicable regional terms in Kingston’s warranty information; do not assume the original warranty automatically transfers to a secondhand buyer.

What to avoid when buying a used SSD

  • No exact model number or credible report: Without these, you cannot check the drive’s compatibility or interpret its model-specific health data.
  • Taking “healthy” or low wear as a guarantee: Monitoring data can reveal warnings and wear, but it cannot promise the drive will not fail.
  • Assuming warranty coverage transfers: Verify the product’s current terms, region, proof-of-purchase requirements, and transfer conditions directly; do not rely on the seller’s assumption.
  • Using a universal lifespan figure: The manufacturer sources cited here do not provide a dependable average lifespan or used-drive failure rate in years.

  • Backwards compatible with SATA II 3GB/sec
  1. Confirm that the model’s interface and form factor work with your system.
  2. Compare capacity and model-specific TBW or endurance ratings.
  3. Review the used drive’s actual SMART data, wear readings, and warnings using the relevant manufacturer’s interpretation.
  4. Check warranty duration, thresholds, regional terms, and secondhand eligibility.
  5. Compare the used drive’s price with a new drive of suitable capacity and compatible interface.

Available information does not let you calculate a used drive’s remaining life from its wear reading alone. If you choose a new SSD instead, match SATA versus NVMe, physical form factor, capacity, warranty, and model-specific endurance to your device and needs; no particular model is endorsed here.
