If Samsung Magician says your new Samsung 980 1TB has no firmware update, that may be the correct result: a new drive does not necessarily need an update. Samsung’s firmware page currently lists firmware 3B4QFXO7 for the standard 980. First verify the model and installed firmware; if an update is offered but fails, check the connection, RAPID Mode, RAID configuration, and Magician setup before trying Samsung’s bootable ISO.

First, confirm it is the Samsung 980—not the 980 PRO

“980 1TB” is not enough to identify the firmware package. The standard Samsung SSD 980 1TB belongs to model family MZ-V8V1T0; retail suffixes include MZ-V8V1T0BW. It is an M.2 2280 PCIe Gen 3.0 x4 NVMe 1.4 drive. Check the product name, full model number, and current firmware revision in Magician’s drive details. You can also check the SSD label or Windows drive information.

Drive Model identifier Firmware currently listed by Samsung
Samsung SSD 980 MZ-V8V1T0 family 3B4QFXO7
Samsung SSD 980 PRO MZ-V8P family 5B2QGXA7

Samsung lists these as separate product families and firmware packages on its firmware and software download page. Do not install the 980 PRO package on a standard 980, or use a package for an OEM drive just because its capacity is 1TB. Samsung’s 980 product page has product specifications and model information.

Check whether an update is actually available

Samsung’s download page currently lists 3B4QFXO7 for the standard NVMe SSD 980. Compare that with the firmware revision shown for your drive in Magician. Samsung does not necessarily show a consumer-facing release date for each firmware image, so treat the listing as current when you check it rather than assuming a dated release schedule.

  • Magician reports the listed revision: there is no reason to flash the firmware just because the SSD is new.
  • Magician reports an older revision but says no update is available: refresh the drive list, confirm Magician can reach Samsung’s update service, and check the model again. Samsung recommends an internet connection for current firmware and application updates, although Magician can run without one.
  • The model or firmware does not match the standard 980 listing: stop before flashing. It may be a regional model, OEM drive, or a different product; confirm its identity with Samsung or the seller.

A newly connected drive may need a manual refresh before Magician identifies it correctly. If the drive is not listed at all, work through the detection checks below rather than treating that as an update failure.

Update the 980 safely through Magician

Samsung’s download page currently lists Magician 9.0.1 (as of August 16, 2026). Internal SSD firmware updating through Magician is supported on Windows; Samsung’s internal SSD FAQ does not support that workflow on macOS or Linux. Download Magician only from Samsung’s official tools page.

  1. Back up important files. Samsung says a firmware update should not affect stored data, but recommends a complete backup because an update carries risk.
  2. Use a direct internal connection. Install the SSD in a motherboard M.2 slot with NVMe support. Samsung says internal SSD firmware cannot be updated through a USB enclosure or adapter.
  3. Remove update blockers. Turn off RAPID Mode if enabled and ensure the SSD is not configured in RAID mode. Close other applications before starting.
  4. Refresh and select the drive. Open Magician, refresh the drive list if needed, and verify the product name and model before proceeding.
  5. Run the offered firmware update. Follow Magician’s prompts. Reboot when requested; do not power off, disconnect the SSD, or terminate Magician during the operation.
  6. Verify after restart. Reopen Magician and check the firmware revision shown for the 980.

Samsung’s internal SSD firmware FAQ covers backup precautions, USB and RAID restrictions, RAPID Mode, reboot requirements, and the fact that firmware downgrade is not supported.

Fix the problem based on what Magician does

What you see Likely explanation Next step
No update is offered The installed firmware may already be current; the list may be stale, the online check may have failed, or the drive may not be a standard retail 980. Compare model and firmware with Samsung’s current listing, refresh Magician, and check the internet connection or proxy/firewall.
The drive appears, but the update fails USB connection, RAPID Mode, RAID, controller path, permissions, or Magician installation may block the operation. Use an internal NVMe connection, disable RAPID Mode, check RAID, reboot, then retry Magician as administrator.
The SSD is missing in Magician Magician may not see the drive through the current controller path, or the drive may not be detected by Windows or BIOS. Check BIOS/UEFI and Windows Disk Management, confirm the M.2 slot supports NVMe, and refresh the drive list.
Magician itself will not launch or behaves incorrectly The installation may be damaged or outdated. Reinstall a fresh copy from Samsung’s official tools page.
The bootable ISO cannot see the SSD The drive may be hidden by a controller configuration or the boot environment may not support the system’s path. Stop rather than force a flash; investigate the hardware and BIOS configuration or contact Samsung.

If the update fails immediately

Refresh the drive list, close Magician, reboot Windows, then reopen Magician with administrative privileges. Turn off RAPID Mode, disconnect unnecessary external storage, and close disk-monitoring, cloning, backup, encryption, or virtualization tools temporarily. Check Magician’s Drive Details or System Compatibility information for warnings; Samsung says this area can identify system conditions that prevent features from working.

RAID and Intel VMD can complicate detection or updating because they change how Windows and utilities access an NVMe device. Do not disable VMD or change a RAID setting blindly: on some systems, Windows depends on the existing storage driver and boot configuration, and changing the setting can stop Windows from starting. If a controller change seems necessary, first consult the PC or motherboard maker’s instructions and prepare for the boot implications.

Samsung’s older Magician 7.1.1 installation guide warns that firmware updates may fail with SSDs connected through an AMD controller. That is a version- and configuration-dependent warning, not evidence that every AMD system cannot update. If you use an AMD platform, first try the current Magician and supported direct connection; if failure persists, use Samsung support rather than assuming the drive is defective. The warning appears in Samsung’s Magician 7.1.1 installation guide.

If Magician remains unreliable

Uninstall Magician, reboot, download a fresh installer from Samsung, and reinstall it. Samsung’s support material also describes removing old Magician registry entries when a corrupted installation remains. Treat registry editing as an advanced last resort: back up the registry first, and do not delete keys unless you can identify the correct entries from Samsung’s guidance.

Use Samsung’s bootable ISO only as a fallback

Samsung currently lists the standard 980 firmware ISO 3B4QFXO7 (26 MB shown on the download page). Confirm the model family carefully and download the ISO from Samsung’s firmware page, not an unofficial mirror. Back up the drive first.

  1. Create a bootable USB drive from the downloaded ISO using a trusted USB-writing utility.
  2. Boot the PC from that USB. The boot-menu key and Secure Boot or USB-writing settings vary by motherboard.
  3. Select only the matching Samsung 980 drive in the firmware utility and allow the operation to finish without interruption.
  4. Restart and verify the firmware revision in Magician or the system’s NVMe information.

The ISO is an official alternative, not a guarantee: controller configuration, firmware/BIOS settings, or drive visibility can still prevent it from working. If the utility does not recognize the drive, do not force the flash or try a 980 PRO image. Samsung also states that firmware cannot be downgraded after an upgrade.

If Magician does not detect the 980

Detection and updating are separate problems. Start by checking whether BIOS/UEFI and Windows can see the SSD. If BIOS cannot detect it reliably, Magician is not the primary issue. In Windows, check Disk Management and Device Manager; in BIOS, confirm the M.2 slot is enabled and supports NVMe rather than SATA-only drives.

Samsung’s Magician documentation notes limitations involving SCSI-controller interfaces, RAID, password-locked drives, and unsupported partition configurations; newly connected drives may also need a manual refresh. See Samsung’s Magician support page. If the SSD is behind VMD or another storage abstraction, consult the system manufacturer before changing modes.

When to stop troubleshooting and contact Samsung or the seller

A Magician update failure alone does not prove the SSD is defective. Escalate if the exact model remains unclear, Magician and the matching official ISO both fail on a supported internal connection, the drive disappears from BIOS, or it reports critical health, read-only behavior, or unstable read/write operation.
