A November 2014 SecurityWeek report said IntelCrawler had identified point-of-sale malware it called “d4re|dev1|,” with reported targets including e-kiosks and ticket vending machines used in mass transit systems. The reported threat was more than payment-card data theft: it combined a backdoor, RAM scraping, keylogging, and a way to update its payload remotely. These are findings and claims attributed to IntelCrawler at the time, not evidence that the malware is active today or that every kiosk or ticket machine was vulnerable.
What the 2014 report said the malware could do
SecurityWeek described “d4re|dev1|” as point-of-sale malware affecting payment devices at merchants, including e-kiosks and ticket vending machines. The report did not establish that all devices of those types were compromised. IntelCrawler characterized the malware as a backdoor with several capabilities:
- RAM scraping: looking for payment data in a device’s memory.
- Keylogging: capturing keystrokes on the compromised system.
- Remote administration: giving attackers a way to interact with the infected device.
- Remote payload updates: a “File Upload” option that IntelCrawler said could be used to update the malware.
The combination mattered because it could give an attacker access beyond a single attempt to collect card data. The report described the infected device as a potential foothold for further activity.

IntelCrawler attributed some installations to insecure remote-administration channels, including TeamViewer and pcAnywhere. SecurityWeek also reported that one compromised device in Sardinia had been accessed through VNC in August 2014. The source said attackers sometimes sought particular retail management systems and application vulnerabilities; it did not provide enough detail to treat any one route as universal.

To make the malware less conspicuous, the report said it could be disguised with process names such as “PGTerm.exe” or “hkcmd.exe,” or names associated with legitimate software such as Google Chrome. A familiar-looking process name alone therefore would not prove a process was genuine, but the report did not specify a detection procedure or indicator set for identifying infections.
Why the report focused on merchant networks, not only terminals
IntelCrawler said the attackers were interested in broader merchant network environments, not just individual payment terminals. That makes the reported use of remote administration significant: a terminal connected to a poorly protected management channel could potentially expose more than the terminal itself. The article described this as an investigative finding, not proof that the malware spread automatically across every connected network.

Komarov’s advice in the 2014 report centered on limiting exposure and protecting administration connections. He said: “We advise to secure [these] devices properly, and not to connect them to public static IPs or to organize insecure remote administration channel to them,” he said. “All the traffic should be [encapsulated] into VPN, as well as ACL list should be created to define trusted hosts for connections.”

In practical terms, those controls address different parts of the risk:
- Avoid direct public exposure: do not make device management interfaces reachable from the open internet where that can be avoided.
- Restrict who can administer devices: use access-control lists (ACLs) to permit connections only from trusted hosts.
- Protect remote traffic: route administration through a VPN rather than an insecure channel.
- Consider the wider environment: limit what a payment terminal can reach inside the merchant network, so compromise of one device does not automatically grant broad access.
These are general access-control principles, not a guarantee that any single control would have stopped the reported malware. Their effectiveness depends on deployment, configuration, and the security of the systems around the terminal.

How to read this report today
The SecurityWeek article, published November 27, 2014, records what IntelCrawler said at the time about “d4re|dev1|.” It does not establish current activity, and the available reporting does not independently validate the technical claims or the reported merchant count. Accordingly, the malware should be described as a subject of a historical incident report—not as newly discovered or currently active. Organizations responsible for payment devices should use current, independently dated security guidance when assessing present-day threats.
