Microsoft made the new Outlook for Windows generally available to commercial customers on August 1, 2024. That does not mean every business user has been moved automatically: Microsoft’s current migration guidance still places the app in an opt-in stage. Eligible users can try it, switch back to classic Outlook, and run both clients side by side while their organization checks feature and account compatibility.

Microsoft describes the app as a modern, Outlook-on-the-web-inspired client delivered through a streamlined Windows integration component. Before adopting it broadly, compare your users’ actual workflows with Microsoft’s current feature matrix.

What “available to anyone who wants it” means

“Anyone who wants it” describes an available option, not a mandate. Microsoft announced commercial General Availability on August 1, 2024, giving eligible commercial customers access to Microsoft support channels. General Availability is different from automatic migration, and it does not establish that every tenant has the same eligibility or configuration.

Microsoft Learn currently says new Outlook for Windows is in the opt-in stage: it is off by default and appears through a “Try the new Outlook” toggle in classic Outlook. Microsoft’s migration model also describes later opt-out and cutover stages. Managed enterprise administrators are promised at least 12 months’ notice before those stages. Microsoft says new Microsoft 365 deployments are planned to feature new Outlook at cutover, while existing classic Outlook installations using perpetual or subscription licensing are planned to remain supported until at least 2029. Those are Microsoft’s stated roadmap positions, not a guaranteed migration date for a particular tenant.

Read Microsoft’s current migration stages guidance for the applicable rollout status: Stages of migration to new Outlook for Windows.

Can you switch back to classic Outlook?

Yes. Under Microsoft’s current guidance, users can turn off the toggle in new Outlook to open classic Outlook, and both applications can run side by side. Microsoft also documents opening classic Outlook from within new Outlook without first leaving the new client. This makes a pilot reversible when a required workflow is missing.

What changes technically

Microsoft says new Outlook is built on a modern service architecture inspired by Outlook on the web. A streamlined Native Windows Integration Component uses WebView2 to provide Windows-specific access to local resources, files, and richer notifications; most feature implementations live outside that thin integration layer. Microsoft also says new functionality is delivered through service release rings, with Targeted release available for users or tenants that want earlier access. Critical updates may be delivered within hours, according to Microsoft’s product documentation.

That architecture has a direct compatibility consequence: COM add-ins are unsupported in new Outlook, while existing web add-ins are supported. A COM-dependent line-of-business process should not be assumed to have an equivalent replacement.

Fewer air bubbles – for the smoothest finish, don’t peel off the entire backing at once. Instead, fold back a small section, line it up, and press gradually as you peel more. The “peel-and-stick-all-at-once” method only works for thin decals, not for stickers like ours.

Feature and account support varies

Microsoft’s feature matrix, updated September 23, 2026, labels capabilities as available, partially available, unsupported, under investigation, upcoming, or revised. It warns that the list is not exhaustive and that some functions require qualifying Microsoft 365 subscriptions. Check the live matrix for the exact account type, license, and workflow before deployment.

How to try new Outlook safely

  1. Check eligibility and policy. In classic Outlook, look in the upper-right area for the “Try the new Outlook” toggle. If it is absent, ask whether the account is unsupported or an administrator has blocked it.
  2. Select the toggle. New Outlook opens using the default send account. On first launch, import settings or choose to skip that step.
  3. Test representative work. Send and receive messages, use calendars and contacts, open shared resources, run required add-ins, handle PST data, and perform any public-folder or network-share tasks your users depend on.
  4. Keep classic Outlook available. Turn the toggle off in new Outlook, or use Microsoft’s documented option to open classic Outlook directly when a required function is unavailable.
  5. Pilot before expansion. Include each essential account type, license, add-in, and workflow in a small pilot group, then record failures and workarounds before changing the default for a department or tenant.

Microsoft’s onboarding instructions, including the switching controls, are documented at Getting started with the new Outlook for Windows and Switch to new Outlook for Windows.

What organizations should decide before rollout

Inventory essential workflows

  • Identify whether users rely on COM add-ins, public-folder administration, network-share attachments, on-premises Exchange, or advanced PST management.
  • Map every required account type, including Microsoft 365, consumer, Gmail, iCloud, IMAP, POP, and on-premises Exchange.
  • Check whether each capability is available for the organization’s subscription and tenant configuration.

Define a reversible pilot

  • Let pilot users run both clients and switch back without losing access to classic Outlook.
  • Use Targeted release only where the organization accepts earlier service changes.
  • Set an owner and deadline for resolving unsupported or partially available workflows.

Separate product availability from migration timing

Commercial General Availability means Microsoft offers the product and support; it does not tell an administrator when a specific tenant will be moved. Verify tenant controls, Microsoft 365 deployment choices, and the current migration-stage guidance before announcing a mandatory change.

Bottom line for commercial customers

New Outlook for Windows is a legitimate commercial option, and Microsoft’s current guidance makes trying it reversible. It is not yet a universal replacement for classic Outlook: COM add-ins, network-share access, public-folder administration, PST operations, and on-premises Exchange each have important limitations or qualifications. Adopt it when a pilot confirms that your users’ accounts, licenses, extensions, and daily workflows are covered—not simply because the product reached General Availability.
