Researchers demonstrated a way to fold flat, patterned nickel templates into nanoscale boxes using heat-driven tin hinges. A 2009 account put the boxes at about 100 nm across, with pattern lines as thin as 15 nm. The work showed a fabrication method—not a finished technology for sensing, storage or other proposed uses.

How the nanoboxes fold

The starting point is a cross-shaped template patterned on a silicon substrate. Its panels are nickel, connected by hinges made from fragmented tin grains. During fabrication, heating melts and joins the tin grains. The resulting torque lifts the nickel panels and folds them into a cube.

The process described by Chemistry World used two electron-beam lithography treatments. The first patterned the flat templates. The second etched the cube sides free from the silicon substrate so they could lift; it also supplied the heat that melted the tin hinges.

What was demonstrated—and what was proposed

Demonstrated fabrication

The reported result was the creation of patterned three-dimensional boxes by folding lithographically patterned two-dimensional structures. The flat panels could be patterned before folding, including with holes or deposited metal such as gold. The report also describes examples marked with the initials of Johns Hopkins University and says that changing the amount of tin in the hinges could vary the fold angle.

Possible future uses

The report discusses circuits, biological or optical attachments, sensors and nanofluidic devices as potential applications. A quoted expert also suggested storage, transport, labelling and confinement. These were possibilities, not applications shown to be working in the reported demonstration. Pyramids and dodecahedrons were likewise proposed as future shapes, not reported as fabricated results.

Reported scale and research context

Chemistry World reported boxes around 100 nm in size and patterned lines as thin as 15 nm. These are figures from its 2009 account, not independent remeasurements. The report identifies the associated paper as Jeong-Hyun Cho and David H. Gracias, “Self-Assembly of Lithographically Patterned Nanoparticles,” Nano Letters 9 (2009), 4049–4052, DOI 10.1021/nl9022176. A later scholarly reference list also records the paper’s bibliographic details; the full paper text is not available through the cited reporting and reference material.

Why folding matters at this scale

The method addresses a practical challenge: creating three-dimensional structures with features patterned at very small scales. David Gracias, who led the research at Johns Hopkins University, said, “We have a lot of nanotechnology techniques that allow us to build very well in 2D – but building in 3D is more difficult.” He also emphasized that “Patterning in 3D is just as important as building in 3D.”

The approach uses lithography to define details while the structure is flat, then uses hinge-driven folding to produce a three-dimensional form. That makes the demonstration notable as a fabrication strategy, but the report does not establish comparative performance against other manufacturing methods or show that the proposed applications were realized.

What experts said about its potential

Stephen Chou, identified in the report as a nanotechnology expert at Princeton University, said: “I can see many applications of such a creative nanofabrication method in sensors, nanofluidic devices, and others.” Chengde Mao of Purdue University noted: “The idea of folding up 2D structures is not radically new, but it is amazing to see how this strategy can be used to build such complicated structures.”

Gracias summarized his motivation this way: “I’m interested in miniaturising the world.” These comments describe the promise and context of the research; they do not establish that the nanoboxes became commercial devices.
