September 2026 brought a mix of new earbuds and headphones, from Apple and Bose open-ear designs to Bose’s wired USB-C noise-cancelling earbuds and several over-ear models. The announcements offer a few clearly documented choices, but the nine-product roundup does not provide comparable independent tests across every model.
What new headphones and earbuds were revealed in September?
A September roundup names nine products: Apple AirPods 5; Sony WH-CH730N, WH-CH530 and WH-1000XM4C; Beats 360; Sonos Ace Ultra; Nothing Headphone (1) Pro; Technics EAH-A1000; and Bose’s September announcements add three products relevant to the month’s launches: Sport Open Earbuds, Ultra Open Earbuds (2nd Gen), and Noise Cancelling Wired Earbuds. The roundup page identifies its product set, but does not independently establish complete specifications, launch terms, or current listings for each model. See the roundup.
Which September launches have confirmed prices and availability?
| Product | Format and connection | Announced price and availability | Confirmed details |
|---|---|---|---|
| Apple AirPods 5 | Open-ear earbuds; wireless | US launch prices: $129, or $149 with Wireless Charging Case. Store availability began September 18, 2026, in the US and more than 65 other countries and regions. | Apple states up to five hours of playback with ANC on a single charge and up to 22 hours with the case for the Wireless Charging Case version. Apple’s tests used prerelease firmware and iOS 27 in July 2026. |
| Bose Sport Open Earbuds | Open-ear; wireless | $199 US; availability announced for October 1, 2026. | Bose positions them for running, workouts, and outdoor adventures, and describes its own OpenAudio technology. |
| Bose Ultra Open Earbuds (2nd Gen) | Open-ear; wireless | $299 US; availability announced for October 1, 2026. | Bose positions this as its flagship open-ear experience and describes its own OpenAudio technology. |
| Bose Noise Cancelling Wired Earbuds | USB-C wired earbuds | £99 in Bose UK’s announcement; shipping scheduled to start October 15, 2026. | Inline remote, three listening modes, IPX4 water resistance, and USB Audio Class 2 input with playback output fixed at 24-bit/48 kHz. |
These are manufacturer-announced prices, dates, and specifications—not independent test results. Bose’s October dates are forward-looking availability schedules stated in September announcements. Apple’s announcement, Bose’s open-ear announcement, and Bose UK’s wired-earbud announcement give the respective details.

For a wireless open-ear fit
AirPods 5 and both Bose open-ear products keep the ear canal open, a form factor that may suit listeners who want to remain aware of surrounding sound. Apple publishes battery estimates and two US launch configurations; Bose emphasizes use cases for Sport Open Earbuds and positions the Ultra model as its flagship. Those descriptions are not evidence that one is safer or performs better than another.

For USB-C wired listening and noise cancellation
Bose’s Noise Cancelling Wired Earbuds are the distinct alternative: they connect over USB-C rather than Bluetooth and have no rechargeable internal battery. That avoids pairing and charging the earbuds, but requires a compatible USB-C audio source. Bose UK specifies a fixed 24-bit/48 kHz playback output; that figure describes output format, not a measure of sound quality.
For over-ear options
The roundup also names Sony WH-CH730N, WH-CH530 and WH-1000XM4C, Beats 360, Sonos Ace Ultra, Nothing Headphone (1) Pro, and Technics EAH-A1000. The available verified details do not establish their complete features, prices, availability, or how they compare with each other, so a model-by-model buying recommendation would go beyond the confirmed information.

Which new headphones are worth considering?
- Consider AirPods 5 if you want Apple’s open-ear format and the published US price and battery figures are relevant to your region and configuration.
- Consider Bose Sport Open Earbuds if your intended use matches Bose’s stated running, workout, and outdoor focus; look at Ultra Open Earbuds (2nd Gen) if you are comparing Bose’s flagship open-ear offering.
- Consider Bose Noise Cancelling Wired Earbuds if you specifically want USB-C wired operation, an inline remote, and noise-cancelling listening modes, and your device supports USB-C audio.
- For the other named products, check the manufacturers’ current product pages for regional availability and full specifications before choosing; the roundup’s inclusion alone does not establish that a product is currently available or a better buy.
What the September announcements do—and do not—show
These announcements demonstrate variety in the month’s named launches: open-ear wireless earbuds, wired USB-C noise-cancelling earbuds, and over-ear headphones. They do not establish that wired earbuds are undergoing a market-wide revival. Bose executive Raza Haider called wired earbuds part of a “cultural renaissance” in the September 28 UK announcement; that is the company’s view, not independent evidence of a broader trend.
Likewise, manufacturer battery figures and product positioning can help narrow a shortlist, but they are not directly comparable independent measurements. No complete independent test comparison of all nine products is established here.
