Neuralink is facing documented technical challenges and regulatory scrutiny, but the public evidence does not establish that the company is failing or that its implant has been found unsafe. Its own update acknowledges variable signal performance and continuing engineering work. Separately, Reuters reported FDA findings at an animal-research facility, and an April 2026 New York Times report said the FDA had paused new implants in a Neuralink study—a claim Neuralink did not confirm or deny and whose current status is not established by the available public record.
What does “in trouble” mean for Neuralink?
There are several distinct issues behind the concern: performance variability in an investigational brain-computer interface, reported problems with oversight of animal research, and an unconfirmed report of a clinical-study hold. They carry different evidentiary weight. Neuralink’s performance and safety figures are company statements; the animal-facility findings are described in Reuters reporting about FDA inspections; and the reported clinical hold comes from a single news report based on unnamed sources.
Neuralink’s official trial listings describe research studies, including the PRIME program for people with severe paralysis and studies involving communication and assistive robotic-arm control. The implant is investigational, not a consumer product available to buy.
What technical challenges has Neuralink acknowledged?
In a January 28, 2026 update, Neuralink described variability in signal quality associated with participants’ anatomy and neurological condition. The company said it had introduced mitigations and outlined further engineering plans. These are company-reported results and proposed work, not independent validation that the changes have succeeded.
#1 Best Overall
| Figure or plan | What Neuralink said |
|---|---|
| 21 participants | Company-announced participant count in its January 28, 2026 update. |
| 18 of 20 subsequent participants | Neuralink said signal quality improved after mitigations in these participants. |
| Zero serious device-related adverse events | The company’s reported record as of its 2026 update; this is not an independently verified safety statistic. |
| 1,000 to 3,000 electrodes | A planned increase described by Neuralink, not a completed device change. |
Neuralink also said it was exploring ways to improve thread retention and investigating whether threads could be inserted through the dura. The company’s full account is in its January 2026 update.
Did the FDA put Neuralink’s trial on hold?
An April 24, 2026 New York Times report by Carl Zimmer, republished by Spylab, said the FDA had placed a hold on new implants in the PRIME study after a reported complication involving the second participant. The article, citing two people familiar with the regulatory action, described implant migration and reduced signal detection. Neuralink neither confirmed nor denied the reported hold.

The available public record cited here does not establish whether that reported hold remains in effect. The report is not an official FDA notice, so it should not be treated as confirmation of a current regulatory action. The account is available in the republished report.

What did reporting say about Neuralink’s animal research?
Reuters reported in December 2022 that Neuralink faced a federal investigation related to allegations about animal testing and employee complaints. That reporting establishes that an investigation and allegations were reported at the time; it does not, by itself, establish a final finding of animal-welfare violations. Reuters’ report, republished by Investing.com, covers that investigation.

In February 2024, Reuters reported that FDA inspectors had identified documentation and quality-control issues during 2023 inspections of Neuralink’s animal-research facility. Reuters also reported the FDA’s response that the inspection found no evidence of violations that would undermine device safety. Those findings concern the facility’s records and controls; they should not be recast as a regulator’s determination that Neuralink’s human-trial device was unsafe. Read the Reuters inspection report, republished by Investing.com.
Is Neuralink in financial trouble?
The cited financial filing does not establish that. A June 22, 2026 SEC Form D names TWE Neuralink SPV, LLC as the filer. A private-offering notice filed by that special-purpose vehicle is not a financial statement for Neuralink Corporation and does not show the company’s cash runway, valuation, or solvency. The SEC filing detail supports identifying the filer, not a conclusion about Neuralink’s overall financial health.

How should readers assess the claims?
- Company performance figures: Treat them as Neuralink’s own reporting unless independent verification is provided.
- Regulatory reporting: Distinguish reported inspection deficiencies from a formal finding that a device is unsafe.
- Clinical-hold claims: Attribute the April 2026 account to the report and do not present the hold as confirmed or current.
- Company finances: Do not infer distress from a filing by an affiliated SPV.
Neuralink posts company announcements on its updates page, while study listings appear on its clinical trials page. Those pages can change, and an official update would be needed to establish a later change in study status.
