A network adapter is the part of a computer that provides a connection to a network. It may be built into the computer, installed as an internal card, or attached externally, so there is no single shape to look for. Ethernet adapters connect by cable; Wi-Fi adapters connect wirelessly.
What does a network adapter look like?
Its appearance depends on how the computer’s networking hardware is installed. A laptop or desktop can have built-in networking that is not visible as a separate device. An internal desktop adapter may be an expansion card with an Ethernet jack, while an external adapter may be a small device that plugs into USB. Microsoft describes all of these forms in its network setup guidance.
In Windows terminology, a network interface does not always mean a removable physical part. Microsoft’s overview of network interfaces explains that it is typically represented by a physical Network Interface Card (NIC), but can also be software-only, such as a loopback interface.
What does it do?
A network adapter provides the connection point that lets a computer communicate with other devices on a network. As Microsoft puts it, “An adapter connects devices to a network so that they can communicate.”

For a physical network card, the hardware handles the physical connection and sends or receives network signals. In Windows, a device driver—specifically, a miniport driver—lets the operating system manage and use the NIC as part of its networking stack. The hardware and driver work together; the adapter is not the same thing as the internet connection or the router.
Ethernet and Wi-Fi adapters
The main distinction is how the computer connects:
- Ethernet: A wired adapter connects to a network through an Ethernet cable and port. An internal desktop card may expose one or more Ethernet jacks; some Ethernet adapters are external and connect through USB.
- Wi-Fi: A wireless adapter connects to a wireless local network without an Ethernet cable. Many computers have Wi-Fi built in, so no separate adapter needs to be visible.
The connector and capabilities vary by model. Intel’s Ethernet adapter catalog lists, for example, I226 products supporting up to 2.5GbE, as well as RJ45 models and I350 variants with dual- or quad-port configurations. These are product specifications, not a guarantee of real-world throughput: the computer, cable, network equipment, and connection all affect performance.

How to check which adapters your computer has
Check Device Manager
In Windows, open Device Manager and expand Network adapters. The listed names show adapters Windows recognizes. Microsoft’s guidance suggests looking for “wireless” in an adapter name when checking for Wi-Fi hardware. Labels and navigation can vary by Windows version.

Why might Wi-Fi be missing from the connection options?
A missing Wi-Fi option does not by itself establish that the computer has no wireless hardware. The computer may lack a Wi-Fi adapter, or Windows may not recognize the adapter or its driver correctly. Check Device Manager for a wireless entry; if the device is absent or flagged, consult support information for the specific computer or adapter model before deciding it needs replacement.
What to check before buying an adapter
Start with the connection you need, then verify that the adapter fits the computer and works with its software and network. There is no universally best adapter: the right choice depends on the machine and the intended connection.

- Connector and ports: Confirm the connector type and how many ports you need. Ethernet products can differ in both.
- Speed: Match the adapter’s supported speed to your network equipment and use case; a higher rated adapter alone does not guarantee faster end-to-end performance.
A PCIe Ethernet network adapter or internal Ethernet card is an option for a desktop that has a compatible expansion slot and supported drivers. A USB network adapter is an alternative when the computer has a compatible USB port. In either case, verify the exact model’s requirements before purchase.
