The NETGEAR WAX220 is a strong-performing Wi-Fi 6 access point for a small office or home office that already has a wired network and can supply suitable power. Its local browser setup is straightforward, and TechRadar recorded high file-copy rates in a specific 2025 lab test. But it is a standalone AP—not an all-in-one router or cloud-managed system—and it lacks wireless meshing and captive portals. Whether it fits depends on your management needs, wired uplink and power setup.
What is the NETGEAR WAX220?
The WAX220 is a dual-band Wi-Fi 6 access point intended for small and medium businesses and home offices. It adds wireless access to an existing wired router or switch; it is not a replacement for your router, internet connection or network firewall.
NETGEAR rates it AX4200, combining theoretical maximum throughput figures of 3.6Gbps on 5GHz and 0.6Gbps on 2.4GHz. Those are manufacturer specifications across the bands, not a speed one client should expect to achieve. The product page specifies a 4×4 5GHz radio with 20/40/80/160MHz channel widths and a 2×2 2.4GHz radio with 20/40MHz widths. It also claims coverage of 2,000 square feet (185 square metres); actual coverage depends on the building, placement, interference and client devices. NETGEAR WAX220 product page.

Treat those as vendor capacity figures, not a promise that dozens of active devices will all receive high throughput simultaneously. The AP has one 2.5GbE Ethernet port, so a wired connection faster than 1Gbps can give it more uplink capacity than a gigabit port, though the radio and client still determine real-world transfer speeds.

Is the WAX220 fast enough?
TechRadar’s Dave Mitchell published a hands-on review on 21 April 2025. In that test, the WAX220 was connected to a Zyxel XS1930-12HP 10GbE multi-gigabit PoE++ switch. A Dell Windows 11 Pro workstation with a TP-Link Archer TXE75E Wi-Fi 6/6E PCIe adapter copied large files from a Windows server on a 10GbE LAN. The figures below are average file-copy rates from that setup—not internet speed tests or universal performance guarantees. TechRadar’s WAX220 review.
| Channel width | Close range | 10 metres away, adjoining room | Test detail |
|---|---|---|---|
| 80MHz | 116MB/s average file copy | 88MB/s average file copy | TechRadar test, 21 April 2025; stated workstation, AP and 10GbE LAN setup |
| 160MHz | 180MB/s average file copy | 157MB/s average file copy | TechRadar test, 21 April 2025; client reported a 2.4Gbps connection rate |
The 2.4Gbps figure is the client’s reported Wi-Fi connection rate with 160MHz enabled, not the measured file-copy throughput. The test suggests the WAX220 can deliver strong local transfers when the client supports wide channels and conditions are favorable. It does not show how the AP will perform through different walls, with other client radios, or in congested spectrum. TechRadar also reported that its test guest network connected using OWE.

How is setup and management?
The WAX220 is administered through a local browser-based web interface. NETGEAR says no app or subscription is required. For first-time setup, the manual describes connecting to the AP’s management Wi-Fi network, whose SSID follows the pattern WAX220XXXXX-CONFIG-ONLY; the Xs represent the last six characters of the AP’s LAN MAC address. Open https://www.aplogin.net to reach setup. The manual warns that the browser may show a certificate warning because the AP uses a self-signed certificate; that warning is specific to this local setup and is not a reason to dismiss unrelated security warnings. In its review, TechRadar described a short setup wizard that requested a new administrator password, the first wireless network and its encryption key, then rebooted. That is a practical fit for someone comfortable managing one AP directly. The WAX220 does not support NETGEAR Insight cloud management, wireless meshing or captive portals, according to TechRadar. If you need centralized cloud administration across sites, wireless links between APs where Ethernet is unavailable, or a captive-portal guest workflow, compare systems that explicitly provide those features.

What wireless and security features does it offer?
NETGEAR documents support for WPA, WPA2 and WPA3, MAC-based access control and up to four SSIDs. These provide options for configuring wireless access, but their presence alone does not establish that networks are isolated from each other. Buyers who need guest or device separation should confirm the applicable firmware’s VLAN and network configuration options and plan those settings alongside the wired network.
Older Wi-Fi clients are supported, according to NETGEAR’s datasheet, though their capabilities and performance will remain limited by the clients themselves. The 160MHz option is most relevant when clients support it and the local channel environment permits its use; it is not necessary for every deployment, and the TechRadar test’s faster result should not be assumed in a busy or restricted radio environment. Does the WAX220 need a PoE switch?
Not necessarily, but you need a compatible power source. NETGEAR specifies PoE+ support and lists 15W PoE power consumption on its product page. Its datasheet says a 12V/2.5A (30W) DC adapter is included with the WAX220PA model only. TechRadar noted that the package it reviewed did not include an adapter; it reported a separate £13 adapter price at the time of publication, 21 April 2025. That historical UK price is not a current or universal price. Check the exact SKU and package contents in your region before buying.
A PoE+ switch can supply power over the Ethernet cable, and a switch with a 2.5GbE port can also preserve the AP’s multi-gigabit wired uplink. If choosing a switch, check both the per-port PoE standard and the total power budget, as well as the port speed; a switch described simply as PoE may not meet the AP’s power or bandwidth needs. The product page lists a ceiling/wall mount kit, installation guide and warranty/support card in the box. The AP measures 196 x 196 x 44.4mm and weighs 523g.

Who should buy the NETGEAR WAX220?
A good fit
- You already have a wired router or switch and need a separate Wi-Fi access point.
- You are comfortable managing a single AP through its local browser interface rather than a cloud controller.
- Your installation can provide compatible PoE+ power or the correct DC adapter for the exact SKU.
- You have clients that can benefit from Wi-Fi 6 and, where appropriate, 160MHz channels.
Look elsewhere if
- You need cloud-based fleet management through NETGEAR Insight.
- You need wireless meshing because you cannot run Ethernet to an additional AP.
- Your guest-access workflow requires a captive portal.
- You want an all-in-one router, or have not confirmed the AP’s power source and wired uplink.
Verdict
The WAX220 combines a 2.5GbE uplink, PoE+ support and impressive file-copy results in TechRadar’s specific test with uncomplicated standalone management. It is best viewed as a capable single access point for a wired small-office or home-office network, not as a flexible managed Wi-Fi platform. TechRadar’s 21 April 2025 review called it easy to deploy with good performance and coverage, but judged its value weak against alternatives available in that review’s market context. Current regional price and availability are not established here, so compare the price and exact package in your market against the management and roaming features you actually need.
