NETGEAR announced the Nighthawk RS600, RS500 and RS200 standalone WiFi 7 routers on September 24, 2024. The main differences are their wireless bands, manufacturer-rated capacity and wired ports: the RS200 is dual-band, the RS500 adds 6 GHz, and the RS600 adds 10 Gbps internet and LAN ports. Which fits best depends on your broadband speed, client devices, home layout and wired equipment—not just the largest advertised WiFi number.

RS600 vs. RS500 vs. RS200: specifications at a glance

The figures below are NETGEAR specifications, not results from independent testing. NETGEAR cautions that actual throughput and coverage vary with network and environmental conditions, local rules, traffic and client-device limitations.

Model WiFi bands and maximum advertised speed Manufacturer-stated coverage and device capacity Wired ports
RS200 Dual-band WiFi 7; up to 6.5 Gbps. The specification sheet lists 2.4 GHz (2×2) and 5 GHz (4×4). Up to 2,500 sq. ft.; up to 80 devices. One 2.5 Gbps internet port, one 2.5 Gbps LAN port, three gigabit LAN ports and USB 3.0.
RS500 Tri-band WiFi 7, including 6 GHz; up to 12 Gbps. Up to 3,000 sq. ft.; up to 120 devices. One 2.5 Gbps internet port, one 2.5 Gbps LAN port, three gigabit LAN ports and USB 3.0.
RS600 Tri-band WiFi 7; up to 18 Gbps. Up to 3,300 sq. ft.; up to 150 devices. One 10 Gbps internet port, one 10 Gbps LAN port, three gigabit LAN ports and USB 3.0.

What the WiFi speed ratings do—and do not—tell you

The 6.5, 12 and 18 Gbps figures are each model’s maximum advertised aggregate WiFi rate, not a promise that one phone, laptop or internet connection will reach that speed. A client’s WiFi hardware, distance, interference, local rules and network traffic all affect its actual connection. The figures also describe wireless capability, not the speed of a broadband plan.

#1 Best Overall
NETGEAR Nighthawk WiFi 7 Router, Up to 2,500 sq ft, 9.3 Gbps
  • FASTER, FARTHER, MORE RELIABLE WIFI: A dedicated tri-band WiFi 7 router with a third high-speed band for demanding devices, built to keep up as your connected home grows with streaming, video calls, gaming, and smart home devices.
  • WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
  • SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
  • WIFI 7 THAT KEEPS UP WITH A BUSY HOME: Up to 9.3 Gbps across 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, and 6 GHz bands, 2.4x faster than WiFi 6. The added 6 GHz band gives your fastest devices their own lane so nothing slows down. Real-world speeds depend on your devices and plan.
  • COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Delivers up to 2,500 sq. ft. of coverage for up to 100 devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.

RS200: dual-band for homes without a need for 6 GHz

The RS200 uses 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. It is the straightforward option if your current devices and internet service do not call for a 6 GHz band, while you still want WiFi 7 and a 2.5 Gbps internet port. Its 6.5 Gbps advertised maximum is not a single-client throughput estimate.

RS500: tri-band with 6 GHz

The RS500 adds a 6 GHz band and is rated up to 12 Gbps. That distinction matters most if you have compatible 6 GHz clients or want the additional wireless band; clients that cannot use 6 GHz do not gain that capability merely because the router supports it. Its internet port is rated at 2.5 Gbps, so it is not the wired choice for an internet service above that port rate.

  • WIFI 7 SPEED FOR TODAY'S FASTEST INTERNET PLANS: Up to 19 Gbps across 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, and 6 GHz bands, 2.4x faster than WiFi 6. Keeps every device connected at the same time with MU-MIMO and OFDMA. Real-world speeds depend on your devices and plan.
  • COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: A 12-stream design for stronger reach, covering up to 3,500 sq. ft. for 200 devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.

RS600: tri-band and 10 Gbps wired connectivity

The RS600 pairs a maximum advertised WiFi rate of 18 Gbps with 10 Gbps internet and LAN ports. Those ports are the key difference for a connection faster than 2.5 Gbps or a wired device such as a NAS that can use a 10 Gbps link. The connected service or device must also support that speed; the port alone does not make it faster.

Which model fits your home and network?

  • Choose the RS200 if dual-band WiFi meets your needs, the manufacturer’s stated coverage and device capacity are appropriate for your home, and 2.5 Gbps wired ports are enough.
  • Consider the RS500 if you want tri-band WiFi with 6 GHz support and its stated 3,000 sq. ft. coverage and 120-device capacity suit your setup. It retains 2.5 Gbps internet and LAN ports.
  • Consider the RS600 if you specifically need 10 Gbps WAN or LAN connectivity, or want its higher manufacturer-stated coverage and device capacity. Its higher WiFi rating does not guarantee better results in a particular home.

Treat coverage and device figures as planning ratings, not guarantees. Walls, floors, interference, client capability and where the router is placed can change results; a large or unusually shaped home may not receive reliable coverage from one router even if its area is below the stated maximum.
