Netflix’s February 2023 expansion of its paid-sharing rules brought Canada, New Zealand, Portugal and Spain into a rollout that had previously been explored in Latin America. At launch, eligible Standard and Premium members could pay to add up to two people outside their household. The prices announced then are historical, not current quotes; Netflix’s present Help Center says extra-member availability and terms depend on country, plan and billing provider.
What Netflix announced in February 2023
Netflix said it had been exploring ways to address account sharing in Latin America and was beginning a broader rollout in Canada, New Zealand, Portugal and Spain. Its announcement described an extra-member subaccount for people who did not live with the account holder. Eligible Standard and Premium members could add up to two extra members, subject to the applicable terms.

The launch charges Netflix announced were per extra member, per month:

These are the prices in Netflix’s February 2023 announcement, not verified current prices. The earlier Latin America rollout was described separately, so the four markets’ terms should not be assumed to apply uniformly across Latin American countries. Netflix’s announcement, “An Update on Sharing”, said its focus was giving members greater control over who could access their account.

Can you share Netflix with someone who lives elsewhere now?
Netflix’s current Help Center says that in many countries, eligible Standard or Premium account holders can add an extra member who does not live with them. If that option is unavailable for the account, the person outside the household needs a separate account. Eligibility can depend on the country, subscription plan and whether the membership is billed through a package provider. Check the account’s available options and Netflix’s extra-member Help Center guidance for the applicable terms.
The policy reflects the scale Netflix said it was addressing: The Associated Press reported in 2023 that Netflix estimated around 100 million households were sharing accounts. That was a company estimate reported at the time, not a current or independently measured count. The Associated Press report covered the company’s rollout.

What an extra member gets—and the limits
Netflix says an extra member has a separate login and one profile, and can watch on one device at a time. The extra member may use the same video and audio quality as the account owner’s plan, subject to Netflix’s stated limits: an ad-supported extra-member slot is limited to 1080p and does not include spatial audio.

The main profile, Kids profiles and PIN-protected profiles cannot be transferred.
- Country of use: Netflix says extra-member accounts should primarily be used in the same country as the account owner’s membership. Someone living in another country may need a separate account.
- Provider restrictions: A package provider may impose additional limitations, and an extra-member option may not be offered through that billing arrangement.
How to decide between an extra member and a separate account
Before adding access for someone outside your household, compare the current local options rather than relying on the 2023 launch prices:

- Check eligibility. See whether the account offers an extra-member option in its country and through its billing provider.
- Compare current costs. Check the price shown for an extra member against the current price of a separate plan. Netflix’s 2023 announcement does not establish today’s prices.
- Consider profile continuity. If the person wants to retain viewing history and recommendations, check whether their existing profile qualifies for transfer.
- Match the limits to how they watch. One profile and one device at a time may not fit someone who wants multiple profiles or simultaneous viewing.
- Consider account independence. A person who wants their own account control or payment arrangement may be better served by opening a separate account.
Can a gift card pay for an extra member?
Netflix says the account owner can use a Netflix gift card or available credit balance to cover monthly extra-member charges. That is a payment option, not an exception to household eligibility or other account restrictions. Netflix’s Help Center sets out the current extra-member guidance.
