On October 18, 2023, Netflix announced higher prices for selected plans in the United States, the United Kingdom and France. The US Basic plan increased by $2 per month and Premium by $3; in the UK and France, Netflix raised Basic and Premium while leaving Ads and Standard unchanged. These are the prices announced in 2023, not current prices.
Netflix’s announced 2023 prices by country
The price changes were announced on October 18, 2023. The table shows the prior and new monthly prices where reported; UK and France figures are the prices after the increase. Each market uses its own currency.

CBS reported the US old and new prices, while Netflix’s Q3 2023 shareholder letter listed UK and France prices and said Ads and Standard were unchanged. Ofcom’s 2024 UK report independently confirms the UK Basic and Premium increases and that Standard was unchanged.
What changed in each market
United States
Basic rose from $9.99 to $11.99 a month, while Premium rose from $19.99 to $22.99. The $6.99 ad-supported plan was unchanged when Netflix announced the increase. CBS reported the price changes on October 18, 2023; those figures describe the announcement, not today’s rates. CBS News’ report also noted that Netflix added 8.8 million customers in Q3 2023 and had 247.2 million subscribers at the time. Those are contemporaneous subscriber figures, not evidence that the price increases caused subscriber growth.

United Kingdom
Netflix listed the post-increase Basic price as £7.99 a month and Premium as £17.99. Ads at £4.99 and Standard at £10.99 were unchanged in the announcement. Ofcom’s later 2024 plan snapshot says Basic was unavailable to new or returning customers in the UK. That later availability detail should not be read as describing the plan’s availability on announcement day or in other countries.
France
After the announced increase, Basic cost €10.99 a month and Premium €19.99. Ads at €5.99 and Standard at €13.49 were unchanged. Netflix’s Q3 2023 shareholder letter provides the French plan prices; these are historical announcement figures.

Why Netflix said it raised prices
Netflix co-CEO Greg Peters said the company had focused on paid sharing for much of the preceding 18 months and was returning to its pricing approach. He described the rationale as investing member payments in entertainment and sometimes asking members to pay more. Peters said: “We look to wisely invest the money that members pay us, deliver back to them more amazing stories, more entertainment value.” This is Netflix’s explanation of its decision, not independent evidence measuring the value subscribers received. What the 2023 announcement does—and does not—show
The announcement establishes which listed plan prices changed and which stayed the same in those three markets. It does not establish the effect of the increases on cancellations or revenue: the available reporting does not isolate a causal impact. Nor should the Q3 subscriber figures be attributed to the price changes.

Because the figures are from October 2023, they are useful for understanding that announcement and comparing the changes within each country—not for deciding what a Netflix subscription costs now. Check Netflix’s current plan details for present-day prices and availability in your market.
