If Netflix says a device isn’t part of your Household, first check whether the viewer is at the account holder’s main home. If so, update the Household from the TV there. If the viewer lives elsewhere, Netflix’s stated options are a separate account or, where available and eligible, an extra-member arrangement.
What Netflix means by “not in Household”
Netflix defines a Netflix Household as “a collection of devices connected to the internet at the main place where you watch Netflix.” Netflix says it establishes the Household using the internet connection of the TV and signals including IP address, device IDs, and account activity. It says it does not use GPS to determine devices’ precise physical location. Netflix Help Center: What is a Netflix Household?
The message is therefore about whether a device belongs to the account’s main viewing location, not simply whether someone knows the account password. The right fix depends on where the viewer lives.

- At the main home where the account holder watches Netflix, open Netflix on the Household TV.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to update the Netflix Household.
- Try Netflix again on the device that showed the error.
Netflix confirms that a Household can be updated from a TV, but the exact on-screen prompts may vary. Netflix Help Center: What is a Netflix Household?

If you live somewhere else, choose an eligible access option
Netflix says a person who does not live in the account holder’s Household needs their own account or may be added as an extra member where that option is available and the account is eligible. Ordinary account sharing is not the stated solution for someone living elsewhere. Netflix Help Center: Extra members
Check extra-member eligibility first
- The account owner must have a Standard or Premium plan in a country where Netflix offers extra members.
- The extra member must activate in the country where the account owner signed up.
- Extra members are not supported on ad-supported plans, some Netflix-included packages, or accounts billed through certain third parties.
Eligibility depends on country, plan, and billing arrangement. Check the account’s current plan and package rules before choosing this option; Netflix’s extra-member page provides the applicable details. Prices are not established on that page for every reader, so check the current account flow for the cost. Netflix Help Center: Extra members

| Situation | Likely next step | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| The viewer lives at the account holder’s main home | Update the Household from the TV at that home. | Use the on-screen process in Netflix on the Household TV. |
| The viewer lives elsewhere and wants independent access | Get a separate account. | Review current account options and cost. |
| The viewer lives elsewhere and wants to join the account | Check whether an extra-member slot is available. | Confirm country, plan, and billing eligibility before proceeding. |
If the error continues after updating the Household
If an unrecognized or unwanted device may be associated with the account, Netflix’s Household help page directs users to review the account’s device list and use “Sign out of All Devices” when appropriate. You can also contact Netflix through its Help Center. Netflix Help Center: What is a Netflix Household?
Use those account controls only if you recognize a device issue; signing out all devices affects other people using the account. If the viewer lives elsewhere, changing the Household is not a substitute for a separate account or an eligible extra-member arrangement.
