Netflix’s U.S. ad-free Standard plan is now $19.99 a month, but that price alone does not show whether streaming beats cable for your household. Add up the services you actually use, required internet, taxes, and any live sports or local channels you need before comparing bills.

What Netflix costs in the U.S. now

Netflix’s U.S. prices reported on March 26, 2026, are $8.99 per month for Standard with Ads, $19.99 for Standard without ads, and $26.99 for Premium. Netflix said new members would see the updated prices starting March 26; existing members would move to the new prices over the following months after notice. Prices and packages vary by country and by distribution partner. TechCrunch reported the U.S. increase.

U.S. plan Monthly price reported March 26, 2026 Key distinctions
Standard with Ads $8.99 Ad-supported tier; other feature details should be checked on Netflix’s current plan page.
Standard without ads $19.99 Two simultaneous devices and 1080p, according to Netflix’s plan comparison.
Premium $26.99 Four simultaneous devices and 4K with HDR, according to Netflix’s plan comparison.

The feature distinctions matter: these are not simply three prices for an identical service. Netflix bills monthly and says members can change plans or cancel; taxes and package-specific prices may apply. Its plan comparison and billing and price-change information explain its terms. The plan comparison page can show localized details, so do not use prices displayed for another country as U.S. prices.

How the $7.99-to-$19.99 comparison fits—and where it stops

The headline comparison captures how much higher the current ad-free Standard price is than a familiar earlier Netflix price. But the available price-history evidence does not independently verify that the $7.99 and $19.99 figures describe the same plan on a like-for-like basis. A 2026 exhibit filed in a Netflix-Warner Bros. Discovery transaction debate claims at least seven Netflix price increases since 2014, totaling 125%; that is an interested-party filing, not an independent official calculation. Its chart is labeled “Netflix US Subscription History: 2010–2025.” The SEC-filed exhibit is best treated as attributed context, not a definitive household price audit.

Why the original “cheaper than cable” promise is harder to judge

A streaming subscription is only one part of a household’s television bill. Many viewers pay for broadband separately, then add several streaming services, while a cable package may include live local channels, sports, and other channels in one bill. Taxes, fees, promotions, and bundles can change the comparison. The right question is not whether streaming is always cheaper than cable; it is whether the services and channels your household watches cost less in the configuration you would actually buy.

A December 2025 affordability snapshot from the U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation says U.S. consumers spent an average of $69 a month on streaming in 2025 and reports a 13% year-over-year increase in streaming costs. The snapshot attributes the spending figure to recent consumer reports, with an endnote pointing to Statista; it is not a survey conducted by the Senate, and the 13% figure does not mean every household’s bill rose by that amount. The committee also says basic cable rates more than doubled over the preceding decade. These figures give context, but do not establish a universal streaming-versus-cable break-even price. Build a comparison for your household

Compare what you would pay and receive over the same month. Use current quotes and terms for your location rather than an advertised starting price or a national average.

  1. Start with the full recurring bill. Add the internet plan you need, each streaming subscription, cable or live-TV service, and recurring taxes or fees. If broadband is already paid for regardless of TV choice, note that separately rather than treating it as a new cost for only one option.
  2. List the viewing you would lose or gain. Check for the specific shows, films, live events, sports, and local channels your household watches. A lower bill is not an equivalent replacement if it drops a channel or event you consider essential.
  3. Compare ads and viewing features. Note whether each option includes ads, how many people can watch at once, resolution, and download allowances. For Netflix, Standard is listed for two simultaneous devices at 1080p, while Premium is listed for four at 4K with HDR.
  4. Check package and household terms. Confirm whether a provider bundle changes eligibility or price, and whether extra-member allowances matter to your household. Netflix says taxes and package-specific pricing may depend on location and how the service is obtained.
  5. Use your normal month, not a promotion. Compare recurring prices after introductory offers expire, and check when a cable, internet, or streaming promotion ends. The evidence here does not establish one break-even figure for all households.

What to do when Netflix’s price changes

Netflix says it may adjust plans and prices as it adds features or responds to local market changes, including taxes or inflation. That is the company’s explanation of its approach, not independent confirmation of the reason for any particular increase. Netflix says it emails members and shows an in-product notice one month before an increased charge takes effect. Its Help Center explains the notification process.
