Netflix did not announce that a new games studio had already opened. On 26 September 2022, the company said it was establishing an internal studio in Helsinki, Finland, and would build it from scratch. Netflix named Marko Lastikka as its studio director, but the announcement did not give an opening date or confirm that the studio had begun operating.
What Netflix announced in 2022
Amir Rahimi, then Netflix vice president of Netflix Game Studios, said: “Today, I’m excited to announce that we are establishing an internal games studio in Helsinki, Finland, with Marko Lastikka as the studio director.” Netflix described the new studio as its second in Helsinki, alongside Next Games, which had joined Netflix earlier that year. Netflix’s announcement said the company would build the studio from scratch.
That wording matters: the post announced a plan to establish a studio, not a completed opening. It did not state when the studio would start work, how many people it would employ, or what games it would make.
How the Helsinki studio fit Netflix’s games strategy
Netflix presented the studio as part of a larger effort to develop original games for its members. The announced model was games included with membership, without ads or in-app purchases. Netflix also said the four studios it grouped together—Helsinki’s new studio, Next Games, Night School Studio, and Boss Fight Entertainment—had different strengths and areas of focus. It cautioned that making a game can take years. The company’s post did not specify the new Helsinki studio’s particular genre or slate.

The plan combined a studio Netflix said it would build from the ground up with studios it had added through acquisitions. Netflix announced in September 2021 that Night School Studio was joining the company, saying its games would be included in membership without ads or in-app purchases. Netflix’s Night School announcement described that membership approach. In a tender-offer document for Next Games, Netflix said the acquisition would add a core studio in a strategic region and talent market and expand its game-development capabilities. The tender-offer document gives that acquisition context, but does not establish the new studio’s subsequent operating history.
What Netflix’s later games announcements do—and do not—show
Netflix subsequently promoted games tied to its entertainment franchises. In a 2025 slate announcement, it said Squid Game: Unleashed was “on pace to be Netflix’s most downloaded game ever,” without publishing a download count. That was Netflix’s claim at the time, not a verified ranking or a current record. The same announcement included mobile WWE 2K games. Netflix’s 2025 games announcement does not attribute those titles to the Helsinki studio.

In December 2025, Netflix also announced games for TVs that use a phone as the controller, including Boggle Party, LEGO Party, Pictionary: Game Night, and Tetris Time Warp. The TV-games announcement illustrates how Netflix’s offering expanded beyond mobile games; it is not evidence that the Helsinki studio developed those titles. Netflix’s games careers page describes a range of offerings, including narrative, strategic, party, and couch co-op experiences, but does not confirm the 2022 studio’s current status or identify who made particular games.

The available reporting does not settle that question. On 13 August 2026, PC Gamer reported that Netflix confirmed Night School’s closure and planned to close Moonloot, a Helsinki studio the article says Netflix founded in 2022. The report does not establish that Moonloot was the internal studio Netflix announced in September 2022. PC Gamer’s report is evidence of studio restructuring, but it should not be used to equate Moonloot with the original Helsinki announcement without an authoritative connection.
