NetEase confirmed in February 2025 that it reduced the Seattle-based design team supporting Marvel Rivals. Game director Thaddeus Sasser separately said publicly that his team had been laid off. The reports do not establish a confirmed headcount or show that the entire game-development team was dismissed.
What happened to the Marvel Rivals team in Seattle?
NetEase said it had adjusted the game’s development-team structure for organizational reasons and to optimize development efficiency. It described the Seattle group as a design team within a larger global design function supporting Marvel Rivals. The statement confirms a reduction, but does not specify how many people were affected or list their roles. GameSpot’s February 18, 2025 report quoted the company’s explanation; Game Developer also reproduced it the following day.

That wording matters: NetEase characterized the action as a reduction of the Seattle design team, not as the dismissal of every person working on the game.

Was Marvel Rivals game director Thaddeus Sasser laid off?
Sasser, identified in contemporaneous coverage as a game director, publicly said his team had been laid off. He also wrote, “My stellar, talented team just helped deliver an incredibly successful new franchise in Marvel Rivals for NetEase.” GameSpot’s report covered his account. The available reporting does not establish that Sasser was the game’s sole or overall director, so his statement should not be taken to mean that NetEase dismissed the whole game team.
Did development of Marvel Rivals stop?
NetEase said the game’s core development team remained in Guangzhou, China, led by Lead Producer Weicong Wu and Game Creative Director Guangyun Chen. The company said that team remained committed to the game and to continuing development. Those are NetEase’s statements about its team and plans, not independent confirmation of future development.

GeekWire’s local report distinguished the Seattle group from the Guangzhou core team. NetEase and Marvel Games had announced Marvel Rivals in March 2024 as a team-based PvP shooter featuring fast 6v6 action; the official announcement is available at Marvel.com.
