NetBSD 11.0 shipped on July 30, 2026, and is the project’s latest formal release as of October 2, 2026. It adds stable 64-bit RISC-V support, initial support for Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite, a specialized x86 MICROVM kernel, broader Linux system-call compatibility, and updated networking support. NetBSD 10 and 11 branches are maintained; NetBSD 9 and older branches are end-of-life.

What changed in NetBSD 11.0?

The NetBSD Project calls 11.0 its nineteenth major release. The release cycle included seven release candidates, from RC1 in February 2026 through RC7 in July, before the final version shipped on July 30. The project describes NetBSD as a free, fast, secure, highly portable Unix-like operating system.

New architecture and platform coverage

NetBSD 11.0 is the first stable release to include 64-bit RISC-V support. It covers StarFive JH71XX systems, including the VisionFive 2 and PINE64 STAR64, as well as QEMU. The release also adds initial support for Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite. “Initial” matters: it indicates a starting level of support, not that every component or use case on a Snapdragon X Elite system is necessarily supported.

MICROVM virtualization

A dedicated x86 MICROVM kernel is designed for virtual-machine use. It uses PVH boot and VirtIO MMIO, with kernel optimizations aimed at this environment. The project says it can boot in about 10 ms on 2020-era x86 CPUs. That is the project’s stated estimate for those conditions, not an independently measured benchmark or a guarantee for other processors, configurations, or total virtual-machine startup time.

Standards, Linux compatibility, and networking

The project reports improved compliance with POSIX.1-2024 and C23 interfaces, along with expanded Linux system-call compatibility. Newly supported calls and interfaces include epoll, POSIX message queues, statx, readahead, close_range, waitid, renameat2, clone3, sync_file_range, syncfs, and inotify. These additions can help software written for Linux run under NetBSD compatibility facilities, but they do not make NetBSD interchangeable with Linux or guarantee that every Linux application will work.

Networking changes include improvements to the npf firewall and a driver for Realtek RTL8126 5Gbps Ethernet, among other device-driver updates.

Which devices and installation targets are listed?

NetBSD 11.0 supports a broad range of architectures and hardware. The project’s download listing includes the following targets and media:

Other listed device families Cavium Octeon MIPS devices, Nintendo Wii, and various ARM devices

The project’s homepage specifically identifies Raspberry Pi and PINE64 among its ARM image targets, making a Raspberry Pi a relevant option for trying NetBSD 11.0. Check the image and installation instructions for the exact board revision before writing media; support for an architecture or device family does not mean every model has identical hardware support.

  • The durable, light-weight design of the Turbo Attaché 3 USB 3.0 Flash Drive is the essential mobile storage solution
  • Perfect for transferring large files such as movies, videos, photos, music & documents
  • Transfer speeds up to 10 times faster than standard USB 2.0 flash drives
  • Convenient sliding collar, and cap-less design protects your content when not in use
  • Compatible with most PC and Mac laptop and desktop computers with USB 3.0 ports

A USB flash drive is a practical installation accessory where the selected target offers USB installation media. It is not itself a compatibility guarantee: choose the image for the intended architecture or board.

How do you upgrade from NetBSD 10?

The documented straightforward route is to boot a NetBSD 11.0 installation image and choose Upgrade. If you use another upgrade method, update the kernel and modules before the userland, then reboot before continuing. Third-party packages also need attention because a system upgrade can make existing packages incompatible.

  • DUAL PORT DESIGN: Thumb drive memory stick makes it easy to transfer data between phones, tablets, and computers
  • EFFICIENT PERFORMANCE: Portable USB flash drive with default exFAT format offers lower power consumption, reliable performance and broad device compatibility.(Incompatible with lighting port)
  • SPEED DISCLAIMER: Read and write speeds are based on internal tests conducted under controlled conditions. Actual read/write speeds may vary depending on devices used, transfer file size, types, and other factors
  • PREMIUM CONSTRUCTION: Metal exterior casing with rotating open/close design and hanging hole for convenient storage
  1. Back up important data and consult the NetBSD 11.0 upgrade guidance and incompatible-changes information for your configuration.
  2. Boot the appropriate NetBSD 11.0 installation image and select Upgrade to use the documented installer path.
  3. For a non-installer upgrade, install the NetBSD 11.0 kernel and modules first, then reboot into that kernel.
  4. Update the userland after reboot, and install any new distribution sets separately if the chosen upgrade method does not install them.
  5. Update or rebuild third-party packages for the new system, checking for package incompatibilities.

Do not treat a kernel-and-userland update as the whole job when using an alternate method: the project’s guidance specifically calls for updating third-party packages and checking incompatible changes.

Is NetBSD 11.0 supported?

Yes. The project’s release-status information identifies 11.0 as the latest formal release, and both the NetBSD 10 and NetBSD 11 branches are maintained. NetBSD 9 and earlier branches are end-of-life. The cited status information establishes branch maintenance, but does not specify an end date here; consult the project’s current release-status information when planning a system that needs a particular maintenance horizon.
