NetApp announced the EF50 and EF80 on March 17, 2026, as new all-flash NVMe arrays aimed at performance-intensive AI, HPC and database workloads. Both are 2U systems that support up to 24 NVMe drives and up to 1.5PB of raw capacity in the base system. The EF80 is the higher-performance model, with vendor-published peaks of 5 million IOPS and 110GBps read throughput; the EF50 is the entry tier, rated for up to 1.7 million IOPS and 41GBps reads.

What NetApp announced

The EF50 and EF80 are the next generation of NetApp’s EF-Series all-flash NVMe storage. NetApp positions them for AI model training and inference, high-performance computing (HPC), transactional databases, sovereign AI clouds, AI-powered manufacturing and neocloud providers. The systems are enterprise storage arrays, not consumer NAS devices.

The distinction between the two models is primarily performance and host connectivity, rather than chassis size or stated raw capacity. Both use a 2U24 controller shelf, while the EF80 has higher published performance and supports additional host protocols.

These are vendor-published specifications from NetApp’s 2026 EF-Series datasheet, not results from an independent benchmark. NetApp’s launch materials do not specify the workloads, protocol configurations or benchmarking conditions behind the maximum performance figures, so they should not be treated as guaranteed throughput for a particular deployment.

How to choose between the EF50 and EF80

Choose EF80 when bandwidth and concurrency lead

With higher published IOPS and read and write throughput, plus twice the controller memory of the EF50, the EF80 is the stronger candidate for the most bandwidth- and concurrency-intensive AI or HPC deployments. Its support for NVMe/InfiniBand and NVMe/RoCE also gives it host connectivity options not listed for the EF50. A buyer should still validate the intended workload, host configuration and performance requirements with NetApp; the published maxima alone do not establish application-level performance.

Consider EF50 when its performance tier and protocols fit

The EF50 is the entry-tier option in the announced pair. Its published peaks are lower, and NetApp lists NVMe/Fibre Channel and Fibre Channel connectivity for it. It may be a better match when those protocols and its performance tier meet the deployment’s needs; the specifications do not establish a price advantage or a particular cost per workload.

Capacity and rack space do not separate the models on paper

NetApp lists both systems as 2U24 arrays with up to 1.5PB of raw capacity in the base system. The documented NVMe drive capacities are 3.8TB, 7.6TB, 15.3TB, 30TB and 60TB. The stated capacity is raw, not usable application storage after formatting, protection or other system overhead; the published figures do not specify a usable-capacity total.

What the AI and neocloud positioning means

NetApp is targeting workloads where storage must supply data at high rates, including AI training and inference, scientific and technical computing, and transactional databases. The launch also names sovereign AI clouds, AI-powered manufacturing and neocloud providers—organizations building or operating infrastructure for AI and other compute-intensive services.

NetApp’s Senior Vice President and General Manager of Enterprise Storage, Sandeep Singh, said: “Data is the key component to delivering business value for enterprises, underpinning performance-hungry workloads like AI or databases.” He also described the systems as intended to help customers deploy and scale high-throughput, low-latency workloads while reducing data-center footprint and operational overhead. Those are company statements about the products’ purpose and benefits, rather than independently measured outcomes.

Lustre, BeeGFS and host connectivity

NetApp analyst Simon Robinson of Omdia said the systems support parallel file systems such as Lustre and BeeGFS, in the context of their relevance to neocloud infrastructure. That statement speaks to the storage’s role in high-performance environments; it does not, by itself, specify a validated filesystem configuration, deployment design or the host-side protocol needed for a particular Lustre or BeeGFS installation. Confirm compatibility and architecture requirements for the intended environment.

The model-level protocol list matters when assessing that architecture: the EF80 adds NVMe/InfiniBand and NVMe/RoCE to NVMe/Fibre Channel and Fibre Channel, while the EF50 is documented with NVMe/Fibre Channel and Fibre Channel. Protocol availability is not a substitute for checking switch, host, software and filesystem compatibility in the target deployment.

NetApp’s launch release described the new EF-Series as delivering more than 110GBps read throughput and 55GBps write throughput, calling that a 250 percent improvement over previous generations. For choosing a specific model, the 2026 datasheet gives the more useful model-level write figures: up to 57GBps for EF80 and up to 30GBps for EF50. The launch’s improvement claim does not supply the prior-generation baseline or test conditions in the materials cited here.
