Yes. You can give Nest Wifi the same network name (SSID) and password as your old router. Google’s help documentation says that if you reuse both, devices that were already on the network will not need to be reconnected.
Before you start
- Record the exact network name. Copy it from your old router’s label, its admin page, or a phone that is already connected. Check for stray leading or trailing spaces.
- Record the exact password. Confirm it by logging in to the old router or reading the label. A single wrong character will make every device fail to join.
- Keep the old router nearby until setup is finished. You will need to switch it off or change its mode at the end (see below).
Steps to reuse the old name and password
- Set up your Nest Wifi system in the Google Home app first, following the normal setup flow.
- In the Google Home app, go to Home → Wi-Fi → Network settings, enter the old network name, and save.
- Return to Home → Wi-Fi → Network settings, select the password, enter the old router’s password, and save.
- Confirm that your phone and a few devices connect to the new network, then turn off the old router or enable bridge mode on it (see the next section).
Google’s help article “Change Wi-Fi network name” states the principle directly: “If you reuse a network name and password from an old router, you won’t have to reconnect devices that were previously on the network.” (Google Home and Nest Help, “Change Wi-Fi network name”)
Deal with the old router
Once Nest Wifi is working, the old router should stop broadcasting the same network. If both routers advertise the same name and password, devices can attach to whichever one they find first, and you may see inconsistent speeds or devices that drop and rejoin unexpectedly.

Option 1: Turn the old router off
This is the simplest choice if you no longer need the old equipment. Unplug it or switch it off after confirming that the new network carries your traffic.

- Each nest Wi Fi router provides up to 2200 square feet of fast, reliable Wi Fi coverage for your home. [1]
Option 2: Put the old router in bridge mode
Use this if the old router must stay connected, for example as a wired hub or access point for a device in another room. Bridge mode turns off the router’s own network role so it stops handing out a competing Wi-Fi network. The menu names and steps vary by manufacturer, so use your router’s admin manual. Bridge mode is not a Google setting and is not covered by the Google Home help pages.
Reusing only the name or only the password
Google’s password help page says devices need to match the network credentials. Reusing just one value is not the documented way to avoid reconnection. If you use a new password while keeping the old name, devices that have the old password will be disconnected and must be updated. Google also says the Home app can show a network insight after seven days for a device that has not been updated. (Google Home and Nest Help, “Change Wi-Fi password”)

- Nest Wifi Pro is up to 2x faster than Wi-Fi 6, so you get super fast speeds and a reliable connection for your entire home[1]
- Three Wi-Fi routers provide up to 6600 square feet of fast, reliable Wi-Fi[2]; and you can customize your setup to create a mesh Wi-Fi system for the coverage you need
- Nest Wifi Pro uses the latest, most advanced Wi-Fi 6E technology[3], so it isn’t compatible with previous generations of Google Wifi or Nest Wifi
- Nest Wifi Pro automatically adjusts your Wi-Fi network’s performance and activity; it prioritizes video calls and helps websites load quickly
- It has built-in technology to make sure your connection is strong and consistent, even at the edge of your Wi-Fi network’s coverage[2]
Name and password rules
| Setting | Rule stated in Google’s help | Practical check |
|---|---|---|
| Network name | 1 to 31 characters | Count it and remove any accidental leading or trailing space |
| Password | 8 to 63 characters, no spaces | Type it in a plain-text field before saving so you can see it |
These limits come from the Google Home and Nest help articles linked above, so check them against the current version of those pages if the app rejects a value.
If a Google or Nest device does not reconnect
Google’s general guidance on changing networks says that replacing a router or changing Wi-Fi credentials can require reconnecting a Nest or Home device to the new network. The steps differ by device type, so follow the instructions for the specific product. (Google Home and Nest Help, “How to connect your Nest or Home devices to a new Wi-Fi network”)

- Google Wifi is a scalable, flexible mesh Wifi system that blankets your home in reliable coverage and keeps buffering at bay; 1 Google Wifi point replaces your router and additional points expand your network to keep the connection fast in every room[1]
- Google Wifi gives you whole home coverage[1]; 1 Pack covers up to 1500 square feet and 3 Pack covers up to 4500 square feet; points work together to create a mesh network for more coverage
- Intelligently works behind the scenes to make sure your Wifi remains fast, so you can stream with speed[1]
- Simple setup in a few steps; use the Google Home app to create your network and get online in minutes[2]
- Parental controls let you manage screen time, restrict certain kinds of adult content, and pause Wifi to specific devices on your mesh network whenever you want
- The device still shows the old network. Open the device’s entry in the Google Home app and check that the network name matches exactly.
- App steps fail or the network settings cannot be changed. Google’s guidance says a factory reset and fresh setup may be needed. Do this only for the device that is failing.
- Some devices reconnect and others do not. Check the password first, then the old router. A router still broadcasting the same name is the most common cause of inconsistent behavior.
Do you need to buy new equipment?
No. Reusing credentials is a settings change, so it works with any Nest Wifi system you already own or are setting up. If you are shopping for Nest Wifi as a replacement for an existing router, Google’s product announcement describes it as a router set up through the Google Home app. (Google Blog, “Boost your home’s signal and style with Nest Wifi”)
