If your Nest thermostat shows E3, E23, or E73, Google defines the alert as “No power to Rc wire detected.” It means the thermostat is not detecting power at its Rc terminal; it does not, by itself, identify which part of your heating or cooling system is at fault. Start by confirming the exact code, then check system power and accessible thermostat connections in that order. These codes and steps are specific to Nest thermostats, not all smart thermostats. Google’s Nest help-code guide has model-specific instructions.
What the Rc power alert means
On a Nest thermostat, E3, E23, and E73 correspond to “No power to Rc wire detected,” according to Google’s help-code table. Rc is a thermostat wiring terminal. The message reports what the thermostat detects at that terminal; it is not a diagnosis proving that the wire, thermostat, breaker, or HVAC equipment has failed.
Confirm the displayed help code on the thermostat or in the Google Home app before troubleshooting. The code mapping here applies to Nest thermostats; other brands may use different alerts and wiring guidance.
Check power and wiring safely
- Check that the HVAC system has power. Look for a tripped breaker or blown fuse at the home’s breaker or fuse box, and check the system switch near the heating or cooling equipment. Some homes have separate power switches for heating and cooling. If you are unsure which switch controls the system, do not guess or open the equipment.
- Turn system power off before touching thermostat wiring. Switch off the HVAC system at its breaker, fuse box, or system switch before exposing or adjusting wires. Do not move thermostat wires while the system is energized.
- Inspect only the accessible thermostat connections. Check that each wire is in its intended terminal and fully inserted. If the wiring is unclear, damaged, or difficult to access, stop and contact an HVAC professional rather than experimenting.
- Restore power and check the alert. Once the thermostat connections are secure and the wiring cover is back in place, turn system power on and see whether the code clears and the HVAC system operates normally.
Google also advises checking connections at the system board if needed. Equipment-side access is not a routine homeowner check: HVAC equipment can involve high voltage and components that retain a charge. Follow the equipment maker’s instructions, and leave internal inspection or repair to a qualified professional if you are not trained to do it safely.

When a C-wire or Nest Power Connector may matter
Google notes that some help-code situations can involve a C wire that is not supplying enough power, or a thermostat that needs a C wire or Nest Power Connector for dedicated power. This is a possibility to investigate, not a guaranteed explanation or fix for every Rc alert.
Whether a C wire can be used depends on the thermostat and the home’s wiring. A spare conductor may be usable in some installations, but connecting it at the HVAC system is an advanced wiring task. Check Google’s instructions for your exact Nest model and system before making changes. Consider a Nest Power Connector only after confirming that it is compatible with your thermostat and HVAC wiring; Google’s guidance does not establish it as a universal remedy.

When to call an HVAC professional
Contact a local HVAC professional if the code remains after the power and accessible-connection checks, if the system itself is not operating normally, or if resolving the issue requires inspecting system-board wiring or opening HVAC equipment. Google recommends professional help when the thermostat still does not work after its listed checks. The alert alone cannot establish the cause in a particular home.
