The Nespresso Atelier S85 is an Original capsule machine built around making milk drinks directly in your cup: add milk and any recipe ingredients, position the cup under the machine head, and start a preset. That setup avoids a separate milk jug, but it makes cup size, frother placement and cleaning part of the routine. The manufacturer documents the workflow and care requirements; the available evidence does not establish how its coffee or foam compares in taste or texture with other machines.
What is the Nespresso Atelier S85?
Nespresso Bulgaria identifies the Atelier as SKU S85-EUBKNE-S, while CHOICE describes the S85 as a Nespresso Original capsule machine. Krups support uses model code XN890840; do not assume those codes are interchangeable. Check the label on your machine and the manual for your region. Nespresso Bulgaria’s product listing and the CHOICE listing provide those respective identities.
The machine makes ristretto, espresso and lungo, as well as milk recipes. Official product and support pages list options including cappuccino, latte macchiato, mocha, iced frappé, and hot or cold milk foam. In milk recipes, the frother operates in the cup rather than in a separate jug. Nespresso Bulgaria calls the owner “the master of your own recipe”; that is product positioning, not an independent assessment of customization or results. Krups’ Atelier FAQ lists factory coffee settings of 25 ml for ristretto, 40 ml for espresso and 110 ml for lungo. These are manufacturer-stated settings, not independently measured yields.
How do in-cup milk recipes work?
- Place the ingredients called for by the recipe in a suitable cup, then position the cup beneath the machine head.
- Lower the head so the frother sits in the cup without touching its sides or bottom. Make sure chocolate pieces or ice do not block the frother’s movement.
- Select the desired milk recipe and start it. The machine prepares the coffee and froths the milk in the same cup according to the selected program.
- When prompted by the machine, clean the frother before making another milk recipe.
For a hot personal-cup milk recipe, the manual specifies at least 80 ml of milk and says not to fill the cup more than halfway. Leave room for movement and foam, and use a cup that allows the frother to move freely. Follow the recipe instructions for the chosen drink. The Atelier manual and Nespresso’s assistance pages contain the relevant operating guidance.

What milk works, and how consistent is the foam?
Nespresso advises using chilled milk at about 4°C for foam and says soy, almond and oat drinks can be used. It does not promise identical results across them: foam volume can vary with the milk type and temperature, the cup, and the frother’s position. The product listing’s broad milk language should therefore not be read as a guarantee of equal foam for every milk or plant-based drink. Check the recipe and care guidance for your market before trying an ingredient not listed there. Nespresso’s milk and recipe assistance describes these factors.
How do you clean the frother?
Clean the frother after every milk recipe. Although Nespresso’s product listing says the frother is removable and dishwasher washable, the operating instructions are the authority for how to remove and clean it safely. The manufacturer warns that it may be hot after use: wait for the clean indicator, then handle it by its grip area. Do not touch the hot portion. The product listing describes dishwasher compatibility; the manual and support guidance cover care and safe handling.

How does the Atelier S85 compare on published specifications?
Published figures differ by source and market. The following values are attributed rather than combined; consult the documentation for the exact appliance and region you are considering.

These source differences mean it is not safe to merge the dimensions, weight, heat-up time or capsule capacity into a single universal specification. The accessible CHOICE listing identifies the machine and gives specifications, but its detailed performance results are gated; it does not support conclusions about taste, milk texture, reliability, noise or value.

Who is this machine suited to?
The Atelier’s documented design may suit someone who wants to prepare a milk recipe directly in a personal cup and is willing to clean the frother after each recipe. Before choosing it, consider the parts of the workflow that matter in your kitchen:
- Milk-drink routine: In-cup frothing removes the separate jug from the recipe workflow, but requires room for the frother and milk in the cup.
- Capsule system: It uses Nespresso Original capsules. Check local capsule availability and the machine’s exact model before buying capsules or replacement parts.
- Cleaning: The frother needs attention after every milk recipe, even though the product listing says it is removable and dishwasher washable.
- Fit and capacity: Compare the published dimensions and capacity figures with the exact regional model listing and your available counter space; sources differ on some specifications.
- Local purchase terms: Price, stock and warranty depend on the market and seller. Confirm current terms locally rather than relying on another region’s listing.
Setup, maintenance and troubleshooting
The official manual includes instructions for water hardness, coffee-volume programming, automatic power saving, daily maintenance, descaling, priming, troubleshooting, recycling and guarantee. Use the manual for the model and market printed on your appliance; the existence of a guarantee section does not establish warranty terms for every country. Krups directs owners to its accessories and spare-parts area, but check the appliance code and part compatibility before ordering.
