Nemotron 3 is NVIDIA’s agent-oriented model family, with some models advertising context windows of up to 1 million tokens. The one-million-token figure is a maximum for specific checkpoints, not a universal guarantee: usable context, latency, quality, and throughput depend on the model, runtime, quantization, batching, and the length of an agent’s tool loop.

Nemotron is intended to sit inside systems that reason, call tools, inspect results, and continue through multiple steps. You can evaluate it through NVIDIA-hosted API or NIM routes, or deploy checkpoints yourself on GPU infrastructure. Commercial use and derivative works are permitted under the NVIDIA Nemotron Open Model License when its conditions are followed, but the license file shipped with the exact checkpoint is authoritative.

What Nemotron is designed to do

Nemotron 3 is a family of hybrid Mamba-Transformer mixture-of-experts models. NVIDIA describes the family as combining long-context processing with visual understanding, reasoning, and tool use. The design targets agent workflows rather than only single-turn chat: an application can provide a goal, expose tools, let the model choose an action, return the tool result, and ask the model to continue.

NVIDIA’s product material describes Nemotron as “Designed for fast task completion” with high reasoning throughput and accuracy for complex agent workflows. In practice, the model is one component of an agent system. Your orchestration layer still controls which tools exist, what arguments are accepted, whether an action needs approval, how failures are retried, and when the run must stop.

The family is divided into Nano, Super, and Ultra tiers. They are positioned for different balances of efficiency, capability, serving cost, and workload length rather than as three interchangeable names for the same model.

How many tokens can Nemotron handle?

Current Nemotron 3 materials advertise up to 1 million tokens of context. The NVIDIA Nemotron 3 white paper (2025) reports a context length of up to 1M tokens, and the NIM model card for Nemotron 3 Super 120B A12B also lists “Context Length | Up to 1M tokens.” NVIDIA’s developer documentation describes the family with the same maximum.

“Up to 1M” must be read as a model-specific advertised ceiling, not a promise that every Nemotron checkpoint accepts one million tokens or that every one-million-token request will be equally useful. Check the model card for the exact version you intend to run.

What counts toward the context

A long-context request normally includes the system and developer instructions, the user’s current prompt, conversation history, retrieved documents, previous tool calls, tool outputs, and the model’s requested output. In an agent loop, tool traces can consume context quickly even when the original question is short. Keep a running token budget for the complete transcript rather than budgeting only for the final answer.

Why maximum context is not the same as practical capacity

  • Quality: Important instructions or facts can become harder for a model to use when they are buried in a very large history.
  • Latency: Processing a much larger prompt generally takes longer than processing a short one.
  • Throughput: Batching many long requests consumes more serving memory and can reduce requests per second.
  • Runtime limits: An API gateway, NIM configuration, scheduler, or application may impose a lower limit than the checkpoint advertises.
  • Agent expansion: Repeated tool results, logs, and intermediate reasoning can fill the window before the task is complete.

For large repositories, conversation archives, or retrieval-augmented generation, use the one-million-token capability as room for a carefully managed working set, not as a reason to append every available document. Summarization, retrieval, deduplication, and pruning remain useful at any context size.

How Nemotron uses tools in an agent loop

NVIDIA says Nemotron 3 models are post-trained with multi-environment reinforcement learning for reasoning and multi-step tool use. The official repository also identifies Nemotron-Agentic-v1 as conversational tool-use data. These materials support using Nemotron as the reasoning model in an agent loop, but they do not remove the need for application-level safeguards.

A reliable call-and-observe cycle

  1. Declare tools: Give the model a machine-readable name, description, argument schema, authentication boundary, and expected return format for each permitted function.
  2. Provide the task and constraints: State the user’s goal, relevant data, time limits, and actions that require confirmation.
  3. Validate the model’s call: Check that the function exists, arguments match the schema, values are within policy, and the caller has permission.
  4. Execute outside the model: Your application, not the language model, performs the database query, HTTP request, file operation, or other side effect.
  5. Return a bounded result: Normalize errors and truncate or summarize oversized outputs before adding them to the conversation.
  6. Continue or stop: Feed the result back to Nemotron, enforce a maximum number of steps and a time budget, and stop when the task is complete or requires human approval.

Controls that matter in production

  • Schema validation: Reject malformed JSON, unknown functions, missing required fields, and values outside allowed ranges.
  • Permission separation: Use distinct credentials for read-only and write operations. Do not give a model unrestricted administrator access.
  • Approval gates: Require confirmation before sending messages, changing records, making purchases, deleting data, or executing code in a sensitive environment.
  • Timeouts and retries: Set deadlines for each tool, cap retries, and make retries idempotent where possible.
  • Observability: Log tool name, validated arguments, result status, latency, token use, and the reason an agent stopped. Redact secrets and personal data.
  • Prompt-injection defenses: Treat retrieved pages, documents, and tool results as untrusted data. Do not let their text silently override system policy.

These are engineering requirements, not a guarantee of autonomous reliability from NVIDIA. A model can select an inappropriate tool or misread a result; the surrounding software must make unsafe actions difficult or impossible.

Nano, Super, or Ultra: choosing a tier

NVIDIA’s current positioning gives each tier a different role. Nano is aimed at efficient, specialized sub-agents. Super targets high-accuracy, high-throughput reasoning and tool calling in multi-agent systems. Ultra is intended for the most demanding long-horizon or mission-critical workflows, including long-running coding and research agents.

Use Nano when

Choose Nano for narrow, repeatable jobs such as classification, extraction, routing, or a bounded tool sub-agent where latency and serving efficiency matter more than maximum reasoning depth. Validate that its context limit and tool-call quality cover the task before deploying it as the main planner.

Use Super when

Super is the middle-ground choice for teams that need stronger reasoning and reliable tool selection across multiple agents while still caring about throughput. The NIM card for Nemotron 3 Super 120B A12B recommends a temperature of 1.0 and top_p of 0.95 for reasoning, tool calling, and general chat. Treat those as the card’s starting settings, then evaluate your own prompts and stopping rules.

Use Ultra when

Ultra fits long-running coding, research, and enterprise workflows where a larger serving budget is justified by difficult, multi-step tasks. NVIDIA’s repository describes 1M context, multi-GPU deployment, and agent-harness configurations for Nemotron 3 Ultra. The Ultra technical report says the model was pretrained on 20 trillion text tokens (NVIDIA Research, 2026); that is a training-report figure, not a measure of end-user quality or a guarantee of benchmark performance.

Option Advantages Responsibilities and risks Best first use
Hosted API or NIM service Fast evaluation, managed serving, and less GPU operations work Review data handling, retention, regional availability, authentication, rate limits, quotas, and current pricing before sending production data Prototype prompts, compare agent designs, and estimate token demand
Self-hosted GPU deployment Control over network location, access policies, model files, and serving configuration Provide sufficient VRAM, configure quantization and batching, operate multi-GPU serving for large checkpoints, patch the stack, and monitor reliability Controlled enterprise or regulated workloads that justify infrastructure ownership

A sensible evaluation sequence

  1. Start with a representative, de-identified task set containing short prompts, long documents, tool errors, and multi-step runs.
  2. Run the same tool schemas and stop conditions through a hosted endpoint so you can measure answer quality, tool-selection accuracy, latency, context usage, and failure recovery.
  3. Record the maximum prompt and transcript sizes your application actually needs; do not infer them from the advertised maximum alone.
  4. If self-hosting is required, select a checkpoint and quantization, then verify VRAM, interconnect, concurrency, and expected latency on the intended GPU topology.
  5. Repeat the evaluation under realistic batching and failure conditions. A configuration that works for one request may not meet service-level objectives at production concurrency.

No universal price or hardware requirement is established here. API pricing, regional availability, GPU model, quantization, batch size, and concurrency all change the cost calculation, so obtain current figures for the exact service and checkpoint.

Nemotron licensing and commercial use

The NVIDIA Nemotron Open Model License states, “Works are commercially usable.” It also grants freedom to create and distribute derivative works and says NVIDIA does not claim ownership of outputs generated using the works or their derivatives.

Those permissions are conditional. The license includes defined terms, notice and distribution requirements, and provisions that can terminate rights in specified circumstances. The file shipped with the particular checkpoint controls; do not assume that every older NVIDIA model uses the Nemotron Open Model License or identical conditions.

Practical compliance checklist

  • Identify the exact model name, release, revision, and download package used in development and production.
  • Read and retain that package’s license file alongside your model and deployment records.
  • Preserve required notices when redistributing the model or a derivative work.
  • Document any modifications, fine-tuning, quantization, adapters, or merged weights that you distribute.
  • Check whether your distribution method, use case, or a later license change triggers a condition or termination provision.
  • Review third-party datasets, tools, libraries, and generated content separately; the model license does not automatically grant rights to every input or dependency.

For a commercial product, have counsel review the exact license and your redistribution plan. “Commercially usable” is a permission to operate commercially, not a substitute for checking notices, derivative-work obligations, privacy law, export controls, or the terms of the surrounding software stack.

Common mistakes and fixes

Mistake: treating 1M tokens as a default

Fix: Confirm the limit in the model card for the exact checkpoint, then test long prompts with your serving runtime. Reserve space for tool outputs and the model’s response.

Mistake: exposing tools without guardrails

Fix: Validate every call, separate read and write credentials, require approval for irreversible actions, and cap loop length, retries, and execution time.

Mistake: comparing tiers by name alone

Fix: Compare the actual checkpoint’s context, parameter configuration, quantization, measured latency, throughput, tool-call success rate, and GPU footprint on your workload.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Mistake: assuming a hosted endpoint and local serving behave identically

Fix: Re-run evaluation after changing runtime, quantization, batching, sampling settings, or system prompts. Keep separate operational limits for each environment.

Mistake: treating model output ownership as the only legal question

Fix: Preserve license notices, review derivative-work conditions, and audit the rights and privacy constraints attached to your training data, retrieved documents, tools, and generated deliverables.
