Erase.com’s review of 714 reputation-suppression campaigns found that starting rank and the number of negative results on page one tracked with clearance more strongly than the volume of positive content published. The findings can help scope a campaign, but they are vendor-reported observations—not a controlled test or a forecast for any one person. And because AI Overviews can cite pages outside Google’s top 10, moving a result to page two may not make it invisible.

What the 714-campaign review measured

Search Engine Land published Erase.com’s analysis on September 30, 2026. It covered 714 of the company’s suppression campaigns launched between August 2024 and May 2026 that had sufficient data for review. Across them, Erase.com tracked 2,461 negative results. It counted a result as suppressed when it no longer appeared on page one at the time of review.

This is the service provider’s own campaign data, not an independently validated study. The article does not report a control group, full sampling frame, uncertainty intervals, or enough detail to assess how client selection and campaign stopping rules affected the results. The comparisons describe patterns in this dataset; they do not establish that any single tactic caused a result to move.

Why starting position and result count matter to scope

The typical campaign began with three negative results on page one. A negative result ranked first in 43% of campaigns, and 75% began with at least one negative in the top three. About three in ten started with five or more page-one negatives. News articles and government pages made up about three-quarters of the tracked negatives.

Erase.com reported a strong association between the worst negative’s starting position and whether a campaign cleared page one. Campaigns whose worst negative began at position four or lower cleared page one about 3.5 times as often as campaigns whose worst began at number one. Campaigns starting at positions two or three cleared about twice as often as those starting at number one. Campaigns with one negative cleared page one about four times as often as campaigns with six to ten.

These relative comparisons are not an individual success formula. For an initial scope, record the number of page-one negatives and the worst starting rank; a single entrenched top result is a different challenge from several lower-ranked results.

Publishing more content is not the same as earning top-10 rankings

The typical campaign published 29 positive assets, or roughly 10 per month. The median was 28 assets for campaigns that cleared page one and 29 for those that did not—a small difference. What differed more was how many new assets reached the top 10: a median of six for campaigns that cleared, compared with four for those that did not.

That pattern supports tracking placements, not just production volume. It does not prove that top-10 placements alone caused clearance: the analysis is observational, and other factors may distinguish the campaigns.

Among a sample of positive assets that reached page one, contributed articles and interviews accounted for about 35%; press releases and news pages that syndicate them, 28%; owned websites, 19%; and business and bio profiles, 13%. Erase.com describes this as a sample, not a complete count. It also reported that second websites ranked more slowly than first websites: about a third had reached page one at review, while most were on pages two to four.

Timelines: what the reported percentages do and do not mean

Among campaigns that cleared page one, Erase.com reported that 40% had done so by the end of month two, 63% by month three, and 85% by month four. The time measure was months active at review; the article says actual timelines may be slightly shorter. These figures apply to the subset that cleared page one, not all 714 campaigns, and they do not promise a timeline for a new case.

Computer Privacy Screen Filter for 24 Inch 16:9 Aspect Ratio Monitor
  • Privacy Screen Filter Size: If the visible area of your display has the following dimension: Width x Height (Exclude Frame/Arrow 1 to 3 mm errors): 20 15/16" x 11 13/16" (532 mm x 299 mm), then this filter is good for you. Very Important to double check your screen's Width and Height excluding frame before ordering. It's not recommended to make your selection based solely on your screen's diagonal size
  • Left and Right Privacy: Not block visibility directly behind you, regardless of distance. The privacy filter makes the screen appear dark when looking at it from an angle (left and right 30 to 180 degree), but clear when looking directly at it. To change the privacy levels, simply adjust your monitor's brightness level accordingly
  • Matte and Glossy Sides: It's a reversible privacy screen filter, giving you the flexibility to choose glossy or matte finish. The matte side will have less glare, however the glossy side will have stronger privacy
  • Perfect for Open Workspaces: Ensure your working space is bright and well lit. Privacy screens do not work in dimly lit areas
  • Two Installation Option: Option 1 uses clear double side adhesive strips that securely attach to any computer screen. Option 2 (for computer screens with a raised bezel only) uses slide mount tabs that easily stick to the display frame, allowing you to take out the privacy screen filter easily as needed

The article also cites two separate historical figures, which should not be combined with that 714-campaign clearance subset: vendor data saying 59% of content could be suppressed within three months and 99% within six months, and a separate set of 46 documented cases with a four-month median and a 16-month slowest case. The populations and definitions differ, so these figures are not interchangeable measures of how long a campaign takes.

Result type affects the difficulty, but does not dictate the outcome

Erase.com groups court and legal record pages, mugshot sites, and arrest sites among the types it found easier to move; local news, social posts, government and regulator pages, and major national outlets as intermediate; and Reddit threads, review profiles, and complaint profiles as hardest. The company reported that court-record pages left page one more than twice as often as Reddit threads, and that national outlets were slightly harder to move than local outlets.

In a review of 25 Justice Department press releases, releases at least nine years old left page one nearly five times as often as releases five years old or newer. These are vendor-reported comparisons, not a universal ranking or causal model. A result’s publisher, age, position, and possible removal route all matter when assessing a specific case.

Page two may still matter for AI Overviews

Leaving Google’s first page does not guarantee that a URL will stop appearing in an AI Overview. In a March 2, 2026 analysis, Ahrefs examined 863,000 keyword search results pages and 4 million AI Overview URLs. It found that 37.9% of cited URLs also appeared in the first 10 blocks for the same query, 31.2% appeared in positions 11–100, and 31.0% were beyond the top 100. Ahrefs discusses query fan-out—related searches that can surface pages beyond the original query’s results—as one possible reason citations extend beyond the top results.

Those are aggregate figures from Ahrefs’ analysis, not a prediction that a particular negative URL will be cited. Nor do they show that pushing a URL past page two will prevent a citation. Treat AI Overview visibility as a separate monitoring question alongside ordinary rankings, and check the actual queries and citations relevant to the person or organization.

How to scope and monitor a suppression campaign

  1. Inventory the results. For each relevant search, record every negative on page one, its rank, publisher or result type, and the date and location of the check.
  2. Check for a legitimate removal route first. Identify whether a result is inaccurate, unlawful, or otherwise eligible for removal under the publisher’s or platform’s rules. Erase.com’s stated recommendation is: “Removal still comes first when possible.” Treat that as the vendor’s advice, not an independent standard or guarantee.
  3. Separate removal work from suppression work. Scope the remaining results by count, worst starting rank, result type, and any removal prospects. These are useful dimensions for comparing cases, not inputs to a reliable success calculator.
  4. Track outcomes monthly. Record which positive assets actually reach the top 10, rather than reporting only how many were published. Recheck the negative results’ rankings using consistent queries and locations.
  5. Check AI Overview citations as well as rankings. Note whether relevant AI Overviews appear and which URLs they cite. Rankings and citations can change by query, time, and location, so a page-two position is not a permanent visibility endpoint.
