CHAI is a character-chat alternative adults may want to consider, but it is not an unfiltered service: its official safety materials say it uses controls and may refuse sexually explicit content. Character.AI also prohibits pornography under its published terms. The key difference is not “filters versus no filters,” but how each platform describes its content rules and controls.
Is CHAI really an alternative without NSFW filters?
No. CHAI is a user-generated character and conversation platform where mature themes may appear, but its Safety Center describes safety systems that refuse restricted material, including sexually explicit content. It also offers optional filters for mature content. That makes CHAI a possible alternative for adults seeking a different character-chat experience, not a guarantee that an NSFW prompt will work.
CHAI’s FAQ describes a social AI platform where users create and share characters, and says community-created characters and conversations may include mature themes. The FAQ says the service is intended for adult users. Its Safety Center describes the platform as 18+ and explains that its systems are designed to refuse some restricted content.

Adult-oriented content is not the same as unrestricted content
CHAI’s materials acknowledge that mature themes can appear in user-created characters and conversations. Separately, the Safety Center says the service’s systems are designed to refuse restricted material, including sexually explicit content, self-harm content, and the sexualization of minors. These published rules do not establish that every mature or romantic scenario is treated identically, or that a particular request will be accepted.

CHAI says its optional safety filters can filter mature content in search, hide explicit messages, and block characters. The Safety Center also describes in-app reporting. These are controls alongside the platform’s moderation systems, not evidence that users can disable all safety restrictions.
The official FAQ says CHAI can also be used in a mobile browser; installing an app is not described as the only access route. Access and controls can vary by location and change over time.

How does Character.AI’s NSFW policy compare?
Character.AI’s published position is explicit: its Help Center says, “Pornographic content is against our terms of service, and will not be supported at any point in the future.” The statement appears in its NSFW article dated May 2, 2023. The same article distinguishes that policy from its work to support a broader range of characters, such as villains; broader character types do not mean pornography is allowed.
Character.AI also says requests to remove NSFW filters on its platforms can result in a ban. Its Safety Center describes classifiers for identifying policy violations and controls on both user inputs and model outputs. Its teen experience differs from the adult experience, using a separate model intended to reduce exposure to sensitive or suggestive content and additional conservative classifiers.

Can you access CHAI everywhere?
No universal availability claim is supported. In an Australian eSafety Commissioner report, CHAI reportedly said, “As of March 8th, 2026, … we currently do not provide free access to Chai in Australia.” The report also says CHAI gave users the option to turn NSFW on and off during the period reviewed. Those are attributed, time- and region-specific statements, not a promise of free access or the same settings elsewhere.
The report notes that most of Australia’s Age-Restricted Material Codes took effect on March 9, 2026, with app stores among the industry areas subject to obligations concerning children’s access to age-inappropriate material. That is an Australian regulatory context, not a rule that applies automatically in every country.

How to decide whether CHAI fits
- Choose based on policy, not the “no filters” label. CHAI’s official materials describe both mature user-created content and restrictions on sexually explicit material.
- Check the controls you actually want. CHAI describes optional filters for search and messages, character blocking, and reporting, but does not promise unrestricted output.
- Check access where you live. Regional availability and access conditions can change; the Australian report is one location-specific example.
- Use an adult service only if you meet its age requirement. CHAI identifies its platform as intended for adults and 18+.
