Nearly 1,400 workers were laid off at the former Navistar truck factory in Springfield, Ohio, on September 30, 2026, three days before President Donald Trump was scheduled to rally nearby. One of those workers, UAW member Kyle Bos, said he had voted for Trump three times but now planned to canvass for Democrats before the November election. The timing links the layoffs to a charged political moment; it does not establish that the rally or a particular policy caused the job cuts.
What happened at the Springfield factory?
The Associated Press reported that nearly 1,400 workers lost their jobs at the former Navistar facility on Wednesday, September 30. The AP said the layoffs were large enough to erase roughly a year of job growth in the greater Dayton area. That is the AP’s characterization, not a separately identified labor-market statistic in its account.
The plant, formerly owned by International Motors, was being offloaded, according to the report. Workers discussed reduced or unavailable overtime as well as pressure from household costs. The report does not identify one definitive cause for the layoffs, so it does not establish that tariffs, a particular law, a company decision, or the approaching election caused them.

Why did the layoffs become part of the election story?
Trump was scheduled to hold a rally at a nearby high school in the Dayton area on Saturday, October 3, three days after the layoffs. The AP placed the job losses amid Ohio and national campaign activity. The proximity and timing are politically striking, but are not evidence of a causal connection between the rally and the factory’s layoffs.

The AP also described an Ohio U.S. Senate contest between Republican Sen. Jon Husted and former Democratic Sen. Sherrod Brown, along with local campaigning by Democrat Rose Lounsbury and Republican state representative Andrea White. Those campaign circumstances are time-sensitive; this account reflects the AP report published October 3, 2026.
Why did Kyle Bos say he would campaign for Democrats?
Bos, 30, a UAW member who described himself as a centrist, told the AP that he had voted for Trump three times but was now done with the president. He planned to spend the final weeks before the November election canvassing for Democrats. “Something has to change politically in this country,” Bos said. He also described a sense that conditions had deteriorated: “Seems like it just kept getting worse and worse and worse.”

The AP connected Bos’s account to his family circumstances and rising grocery costs. His is one worker’s explanation and political response, not evidence that all laid-off employees changed parties or share his views.

Workers told the AP they expected rehiring in six to 12 months by Roshel, a Canadian armored-vehicle manufacturer buying the plant. Roshel said it was “working with everyone involved not only to protect the current workforce, but to more than double it over the coming years through a phased process.”

That statement describes a company plan, while the six-to-12-month timeline is workers’ expectation. Neither confirms that any particular laid-off employee will be rehired, or that the expected timing is guaranteed.

What the report does—and does not—establish
- Reported event: the AP reported nearly 1,400 layoffs at the former Navistar factory on September 30, 2026.
- Political context: a Trump rally was scheduled nearby three days later, but the report does not show that the rally or a specific political policy caused the layoffs.
- Individual response: Bos said he had voted for Trump three times and intended to canvass for Democrats; the account should not be generalized to the workforce.
- Possible future jobs: workers anticipated rehiring and Roshel described a phased expansion plan; neither is proof of completed or guaranteed rehiring.
