The short answer is no. The NBA does not support VPNs or proxies with League Pass, and its own support articles say they can stop content from loading at all. No VPN can be recommended as a reliable way around League Pass blackouts, so this guide does not rank providers for that purpose. Instead, it explains how the 2026 blackout rules work, why a VPN fails, what the terms say about trying anyway, and which legitimate options will get you the game.
How League Pass blackouts work in 2026
A blackout is a restriction that stops a live game from streaming on League Pass in a particular area. The NBA Help Center’s League Pass Blackout Guide, updated October 6, 2026, sets out the current rules by country.
- United States: live blackouts cover NBA team games broadcast locally and all nationally broadcast games.
- Canada: live blackouts cover nationally broadcast games.
- Other countries: the guide says every NBA game is available live with League Pass, subject to its terms and regional availability.
If you live outside the US or Canada, the country-level rule is the one that matters, and you should still check the guide for regional exceptions before you pay for a plan.

The guide explains the reason directly: “Blackout restrictions exist because local and national content providers have certain exclusive rights to show live games and content.” In practice, a local regional sports network or a national network such as ESPN, ABC, or NBC has paid for the right to show a game on television, and League Pass cannot stream it live in that territory.

One detail many fans miss: live audio remains available during live game blackouts, so you can still follow a blacked-out game on radio-style audio through League Pass.
Replay windows: local and national games differ
A blacked-out game does not stay locked forever. In the US, replay timing depends on how the game was broadcast.

If you need a game the same night, a replay window will not help. Plan around the live options below.
How League Pass decides where you are
League Pass determines blackout status from the device you are streaming on, not from your account’s home address. According to the NBA Help Center, the service identifies the device’s location using its IP address or location services when those are enabled. For local team games, the ZIP code you provide is used to determine which teams are covered by local broadcasters.

This is the reason a VPN is the wrong tool. A VPN is designed to make your IP address appear to come from another place, and the NBA’s location logic relies on that same IP address.
Why a VPN does not reliably get past a blackout
The NBA’s support article for error 7027, updated September 13, 2026, states: “VPNs and proxies are not supported and may prevent content from loading properly.” It names detection of a VPN, proxy, or other location-masking network setup as a typical cause of that error.
So when you connect through a VPN, you should expect one of three outcomes: the stream fails to load with error 7027, the game stays blacked out, or the service works until it flags the connection. Streaming services commonly block individual VPN IP addresses, which means a server that works one day can stop working the next. No independent, current test establishes that any VPN provider gets League Pass past blackouts, and no provider’s marketing can change how the NBA’s system responds.
What the subscriber agreement says about circumvention
The NBA subscriber agreement says users agree not to use League Pass where blackout restrictions apply or outside permitted territories. It also states that circumventing, or attempting to circumvent, a blackout or other use restriction can lead to:

- immediate termination of your subscription;
- a $100 early termination charge;
- possible legal action.
Those consequences apply to the attempt, not only to a successful bypass. Paying for a VPN and then being cut off from a paid League Pass subscription is the worst version of this outcome.
Legitimate ways to watch a blacked-out game
Local team games in the US
The NBA guide points US fans to their regional cable provider or an in-market local access subscription. Check your provider’s channel lineup for the team’s local broadcaster, since that is the channel the blackout is tied to.
Nationally broadcast games
For national games, the guide directs fans to the relevant national broadcaster or streaming platform. Its examples are ESPN, ABC, NBC, Peacock, and Amazon Prime Video. Which network carries a given game changes by season and matchup, so confirm it against the current NBA schedule before you plan to watch.

Replays after the window
Once the replay window opens (three days after a local broadcast ends, or 6:00 a.m. ET the day after a national game), the replay can be watched on League Pass in the US.
Choosing a League Pass plan
The NBA FAQ describes how many devices can stream at once. Choose your plan based on that limit, not on blackout coverage, because blackouts apply under either plan.

If you see error 7027
Error 7027 usually means the NBA’s system has detected a location-masking setup. Work through these checks:

- Turn off any VPN, proxy, or privacy relay on the device you are using to stream.
- Reconnect to your normal home or local network and sign in again.
- On mobile devices, confirm that location services are enabled, since the NBA uses them along with IP address to determine location.
- If the error continues, contact NBA support and reference error 7027.
Using a VPN for general privacy
VPNs have legitimate uses, such as encrypting traffic on public Wi-Fi or protecting privacy on a shared network. Those uses do not change League Pass’s rules. If you compare VPN providers for general privacy, weigh the following:
- platform support and how easy the app is to set up on your devices;
- published privacy and security documentation;
- whether the provider’s terms prohibit using the service to evade content restrictions. NordVPN’s own streaming guidance, for example, says its service must not be used to bypass copyright regulations;
- independently published performance methodology, if you rely on speed claims;
- renewal pricing, verified on the provider’s site at the time you buy.
A VPN chosen for privacy should not be expected to make a blacked-out game appear in League Pass.
Where the League Pass rules leave you
Blackouts are set by contracts between the NBA and broadcasters, and the NBA’s systems are built to enforce them. A VPN cannot change the rights holder’s decision, and the NBA treats an attempt to get around the restriction as a breach of its terms. The practical path is to use the local or national broadcaster for the game, use live audio when that is enough, and wait for the replay window when you can.
