It also ranks third among games released in 2026 year to date. The tracking period ran from August 2 to August 29, 2026. The figures below come from press reporting that attributes them to Circana; they are reported estimates, not numbers read directly from Circana’s own chart release.
How the August 2026 ranking is measured
Circana’s monthly US chart ranks full games by dollar sales. It is not a unit-sales chart. A game can rank high because of how much money it took in during the period, so the position says nothing about how many copies moved, how many people played, or how much revenue the game has earned over its lifetime. The reporting covers the period August 2 to August 29, 2026, and places NBA 2K27 at No. 1 for that window.

GamesIndustry.biz reports that NBA 2K27 reached the top spot within four days of Circana’s tracking period. The same coverage places the game third among 2026 year-to-date releases. The monthly top ten, as reproduced in the reporting, runs in this order:

Several new releases filled the leading positions. Madden NFL 27 and Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls were the strongest challengers behind NBA 2K27. Older titles such as Elden Ring and Mario Kart World still appear in the top ten, which shows that August’s chart mixed fresh launches with long-running sellers.

NBA 2K27 editions, platforms and the early-access date
Take-Two lists NBA 2K27 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC via Steam, and Nintendo Switch 2. Its July 22 announcement sets out three editions. Those prices are announcement prices, so confirm current retail pricing before buying.

The early-access date is the one detail where sources differ. Take-Two’s announcement says early access began August 28 for Deluxe and Ultra owners. A chart report carried by TheFly and TipRanks gives August 26 instead. August 28 is the official planned access date. If you are counting how many days of early access fell inside the August 2 to 29 window, treat the two dates as conflicting reports rather than a settled figure.

The wider US market in August
Circana’s Mat Piscatella said: “US video game projected total spending across content, hardware and accessories dipped 9% in August when compared to a year ago, to $4.3 billion,” as quoted by VGChartz. Other figures attributed to Circana in the coverage break the total down further:
- Content spending fell 10% year over year to about $3.8 billion.
- Subscription spending rose 3%.
- PC content spending rose 13%.
- Console content spending fell 7%.
- Spending on Game-Key Card physical releases rose 631%, as reported by GamesIndustry.biz and TheFly/TipRanks. The comparison basis is not stated in the coverage.
The market as a whole was therefore smaller than a year earlier even though NBA 2K27 led the chart.

Hardware: the weakest August since 2013
VGChartz, reporting Circana data, says US hardware sales in August 2026 totaled 559,000 units. That is the lowest August total since 2013. The average price paid for new hardware was $541, which the coverage describes as an August record.
