Jackson Gutierrez is already involved in Navy’s offense, but there is no confirmed announcement that he will be the team’s permanent starting quarterback or part of a set rotation. Navy’s 2026 materials list him as a junior quarterback who also splits time at running back; he made his first career start at quarterback against FAU.
What role does Jackson Gutierrez have at Navy?
Navy’s 2026 roster and biography list Gutierrez as a junior quarterback and record appearances at both quarterback and running back. The roster says he entered the fall second on the quarterback depth chart. Navy’s September 28 game notes describe him as splitting time between the two positions.
His role is therefore broader than that of a conventional backup quarterback: the team has used him in multiple offensive capacities. But the position listing and dual usage do not, by themselves, establish how many snaps he will receive in future games.

That start is the clearest evidence that Navy has trusted him with a substantial quarterback assignment. It is one game, however, and does not confirm a permanent change in the depth chart.
Why has his playing time drawn attention?
He has been used as a runner as well as a quarterback
Navy’s game notes identify his split quarterback and running-back usage. A September 7 RotoWire report said he scored twice on eight rushing attempts against Towson after starting quarterback Braxton Woodson needed a breather. The outlet suggested the two could share a rotation; that was a projection, not a confirmed Navy plan.

He received the opportunity to start against FAU
A September 14 RotoWire report said Gutierrez entered against FAU after Woodson left with an ankle injury and recorded three total touchdowns. Navy’s later game notes confirm Gutierrez’s first career start and provide his rushing and passing line, but neither source establishes the injury’s severity or duration.
He has a leadership designation
Navy named Gutierrez its 2026 position captain for quarterbacks in an April 26 announcement. That signals a leadership role within the position group, not a promise that he will start.

Will Gutierrez play more moving forward?
More involvement is plausible given his dual-position usage and first start, but the available Navy information does not confirm his future workload, a continuing quarterback rotation, or a permanent move from running back to quarterback. The most accurate description is that Gutierrez has demonstrated he can take a major quarterback role while remaining part of Navy’s plans at running back; how that translates to upcoming games remains unsettled.
