A nature-strip garden can provide more wildlife habitat and reduce mowing, but it is not guaranteed to use less water or require less total care than lawn. The outcome depends on plant choice, local conditions, establishment watering and council rules. In Australia, “nature strip” or “verge” usually means the strip between a property and the road; its legal status and residents’ responsibilities vary by council.

Nature strip garden vs lawn: the key differences

Consideration Garden Lawn
Water use Depends on species, soil, exposure, establishment and watering habits. Locally suitable plants may cope with local conditions, but “native” does not automatically mean low-water. Depends on the grass, climate and care. The available Perth verge-garden study did not measure garden water volumes or compare gardens with replaced lawns, so it cannot establish a comparative saving.
Maintenance Can reduce mowing and edging, but may involve weeding, pruning, watering and replenishing mulch. Can require mowing, edging, weeding and other lawn care.
Wildlife Diverse flowering plants and varied structure can provide food and shelter. Closely mown grass generally offers less shelter, and frequent mowing can prevent plants from flowering.

These are typical differences, not a guarantee for every site. The right comparison is the work and water your particular planting needs, not the label “garden” or “lawn.”

Water use: is a nature strip garden more efficient?

Not necessarily. A garden planned with plants suited to the local climate and the strip’s sun, shade, soil and exposure may need less ongoing water than an unsuitable planting. However, new plants often need watering while establishing, and even established plants may need water during dry periods. ACT Government guidance is to use only as much water as plants need: Nature strips.

The Perth study of 22 self-nominated verge gardens found that two-thirds of surveyed gardens received regular water through summer. It did not measure how much water they received or compare their use with lawns, so it cannot support a percentage saving or prove that gardens use less water: Clean Air and Urban Landscapes Hub report.

For a practical low-water choice, start with plants suited to your local conditions rather than relying on a generic “native” label. YourHome notes that many Australian native plants can cope with little water, but that broad guidance is not a nature-strip-specific comparison: Outdoor water use.

Maintenance: less mowing, different jobs

Replacing turf can remove or reduce routine mowing and edging. It does not make the strip maintenance-free. Garden beds can need weeding, pruning, establishment watering, occasional watering in dry weather and mulch replenishment. In the Perth study, gardeners described moving from regular lawn care to less regular garden-bed tasks; the study did not establish a universal reduction in total hours.

Council guidance supports a more limited expectation: appropriate plants can reduce mowing and maintenance needs. For example, Darebin recommends locally indigenous plants as better adapted to local conditions and supportive of local wildlife: Nature strip planting.

Wildlife benefits: what the evidence shows

A diverse planting with flowering plants and different heights or forms can offer insects food and shelter that a closely mown grass strip may lack. In a 2026 study across Merri-bek, Melbourne, native habitat gardens were associated with seven times higher insect abundance and approximately double the species richness compared with conventional grass-covered nature strips. Bees showed the strongest response and were associated with flower abundance and plant diversity. These findings describe that study’s setting; they are not a guaranteed multiplier for every street or garden.

Traditional lawn nature strips offer little in the way of shelter and frequently mown lawns rarely allow plants to flower.” Read the University of Melbourne report.

How to choose and plan a nature-strip garden

  1. Check your council’s rules first. Requirements vary by local authority and may address permits, plant height, access, bins, sightlines, street trees or underground services. Darebin requires a planting permit; Camden publishes its own requirements for its area. See Darebin’s nature strip planting guidance and Camden’s 2026 information sheet.
  2. Match plants to the actual site. Consider sun and shade, soil, heat and exposure, then choose locally suitable species. Indigenous plants are preferable where available and appropriate; avoid environmental weeds. Darebin explains its local planting guidance here.
  3. Decide how much garden care you can sustain. Plan for establishment watering, weeding, pruning and periodic mulch as well as any mowing you intend to retain.
  4. Keep the surface permeable where required. ACT guidance links hardy low-growing plants with water infiltration. Monash warns that impermeable surfaces can reduce absorption and worsen runoff and heat: Options for modifying a nature strip.
  5. Consider a lawn-like alternative if appearance matters. Monash identifies weeping grass (Microlaena stipoides) as an indigenous, drought-tolerant lawn alternative that can be mown once established and provides wildlife habitat. Check its suitability and whether it is permitted in your area using Monash’s options guidance.

Which option makes sense for your strip?

  • Choose a diverse garden if supporting wildlife and reducing routine mowing are priorities, and you can manage establishment and garden-bed care.
  • Keep lawn or use a lawn-like alternative if you want a mown appearance or prefer that style of upkeep; check locally suitable species and council rules before replacing turf.
  • Do not choose on assumed water savings alone. The available Perth study does not quantify comparative garden-versus-lawn use; site conditions and actual care determine your result.
