A Native Processing Unit (NPU) is Q.ANT’s name for a photonics-based accelerator: it uses light to carry out selected mathematical operations and is designed to work alongside a conventional computer. It is not a general-purpose processor category with one standard architecture, and it is not presented as a replacement for a CPU or GPU.
What is a Native Processing Unit?
Q.ANT announced its first commercial Native Processing Unit on November 19, 2024. The company describes the device as a specialized accelerator built on LENA, or Light Empowered Native Arithmetics, and thin-film lithium niobate photonic integrated circuits. It connects to a host system over PCI Express.
The name needs a little care: “NPU” is also used for neural processing units in other products. Here, “Native Processing Unit” means Q.ANT’s optical accelerator, not a universal kind of processor.

How does Q.ANT’s photonic NPU work?
In ordinary electronic processors, electrical signals represent and manipulate data. Q.ANT’s architecture uses optical signals for selected operations. The company says operations such as multiplication and Fourier transforms can be carried out in the optical domain. That does not mean the entire computer—or every stage of a workload—runs on light.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The photonic chip is one part of a larger system. Q.ANT’s NPS 2 documentation describes an x86 system node running Linux, with a device driver and software interfaces around the NPU card. In practical terms, the host computer and software handle the broader computing environment while the accelerator is intended to perform selected operations.
What is it designed to accelerate?
Q.ANT has described AI inference, machine learning, image processing and physics simulation as target areas. Its June 23, 2026 announcement also reported demonstrations of a diffusion model and an xLSTM recurrent time-series model on its second-generation NPU. The same release said developers at Daisytuner compiled and deployed an object-detection model from PyTorch.

These examples indicate that the hardware has been used for specific workloads; they do not establish that every model or application will benefit. Results depend on the operations a workload uses, the software path to the accelerator and the system configuration.
What does the documented NPS 2 system include?
Q.ANT’s November 11, 2025 NPS 2 technical data sheet describes a rack server with an x86 host and support for multiple NPU cards. The figures below apply to that documented configuration, not necessarily to every generation or deployment.

The data sheet’s software and hardware details matter when assessing fit: this is an accelerator to integrate into a supported host and software stack, rather than a standalone replacement for a workstation processor.
How strong are the performance and efficiency claims?
Q.ANT’s November 2024 launch announcement claimed “at least 30 times greater energy efficiency” than traditional CMOS technology. Later NPS materials use “up to 30x” energy efficiency and “50x” performance gains per application. In its June 2026 announcement, Q.ANT tied the 30x framing to equivalent matrix operations at the photonic-circuit level. These are company claims with stated scopes, not independent, general-purpose comparisons against CPUs or GPUs.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
The 2024 announcement also reported company tests and simulations involving Kolmogorov–Arnold Networks: 43% fewer parameters and 46% fewer operations in the described simulated case. For an image-recognition result, it reported 0.1 million parameters and 0.2 million operations, compared with 5.1 million parameters and 10 million operations for a conventional approach. Those figures describe Q.ANT’s reported tests and simulations; they should not be treated as proof that photonic hardware will improve arbitrary image-recognition workloads.

What has been demonstrated or deployed?
In its June 23, 2026 release, Q.ANT said IONOS placed the first commercial orders for the hardware in May 2026. The company also said the Leibniz Supercomputing Centre and Jülich Supercomputing Centre were running its hardware in live production. These are milestones reported by Q.ANT; they provide context about adoption but are not themselves benchmark results.
The same release described the diffusion and xLSTM demonstrations on the second-generation NPU, as well as the PyTorch-to-hardware object-detection deployment. A demonstration shows that a particular model or workflow ran; it does not, by itself, establish comparative speed, efficiency, reliability at scale or ease of deployment.
How should you decide whether a photonic NPU fits?
For an organization evaluating this kind of accelerator, the useful question is not whether light is inherently better than electronics. It is whether the target workload maps well to the supported operations and software, and whether the complete system meets operational requirements.

As of Q.ANT’s June 2026 announcement, the company reported commercial orders and live-production use at two named supercomputing centres. The cited announcements and data sheet do not establish an independently audited, like-for-like benchmark across general workloads.
