Wales came from behind to beat Norway 2–1 in Cardiff, while Portugal defeated Denmark 4–2 in Copenhagen after Cristiano Ronaldo had left the Portugal camp. Wales’s winner followed a second-half red card; Portugal scored twice late after Denmark had twice drawn level.
How Wales came back to beat Norway
Norway took the lead through Oscar Bobb, but Daniel James brought Wales level after being picked out by a squared ball. The match turned just after half-time when Norway’s Torbjørn Heggem was sent off. Neco Williams curled the resulting free kick into the net for a 2–1 Wales win in Cardiff.
Wales manager Craig Bellamy spoke about public criticism and solidarity in comments reported by The Guardian: “Look, I am a strong person, I think we all are, but it’s the people around me I’m conscious of. It’s just society. What are we? Eight prime ministers in the space of 11 years? It’s nuts … We’re such a small country, why can’t we have each other’s backs? Why don’t we look after each other more? The others can go at us. We’re too quick [to criticise].”

Portugal twice went ahead in Copenhagen, and Denmark twice equalized. João Cancelo and Gonçalo Ramos scored Portugal’s first-half goals; Mikkel Damsgaard and Rasmus Højlund replied for Denmark. Vitinha put Portugal in front again in the 67th minute, and João Félix added a late fourth.

The win gave Portugal a six-point lead in the table, according to the Irish Examiner. That is the lead reported after this match, not a full account of later standings.
Why Ronaldo was absent
Cristiano Ronaldo had left Portugal’s camp hours before the Denmark match. BBC Sport reported that he had been benched against Norway and was unused in that match. Ronaldo said he would explain his reasons “in time”; the available reporting does not establish his full motive or indicate that he had retired from international football.

After Portugal’s win, manager Jorge Jesus said: “I still think exactly the same way – there are players with status. That much is crystal clear. But I’ll say it again – the rules are the same for everyone. That’s a method I’ve followed throughout my coaching career and I’ll continue to follow.” His comments addressed the principle he applies to players; they do not, by themselves, explain Ronaldo’s departure.
What the two results show
Wales’s result was a comeback shaped by Heggem’s dismissal: the red card gave Wales the free kick Williams converted. Portugal’s win came after a different pattern, with Denmark recovering twice before Vitinha and Félix scored the decisive goals. Portugal’s four-goal performance without Ronaldo is a result from one match; it does not settle broader questions about the team’s future without him.
