Yes—Nashville’s Music City Loop is a real underground transit project, and The Boring Company reported in August 2026 that two tunnel-boring machines were actively tunneling. It is often called a “Tesla tunnel,” but Tesla is not the project builder or operator: The Boring Company plans to run Tesla vehicles through the tunnels.
What is Nashville building?
The Music City Loop is a privately funded, all-electric underground ride service announced by Tennessee and The Boring Company on July 28, 2025. Passengers are expected to travel in dedicated Tesla Model Y and Model X vehicles driven by trained human Loop drivers. Trips are planned to run directly between their endpoints, without intermediate stops.
The Boring Company’s 2026 description puts the planned network at almost 25 miles and says a trip from Nashville International Airport (BNA) to Lower Broadway would take about 10 minutes. Those are company figures, not independently verified operating results.

Where will the tunnel go?
The proposed airport alignment runs from Lot 16 near the State Capitol toward BNA, following Rosa L. Parks Boulevard, Lafayette Street and Murfreesboro Pike to Donelson Pike. A separate Broadway alignment extends west along West End Avenue. The airport authority’s February 2026 staff analysis also considered a possible branch to Terminal II.

What is the construction and opening timeline?

The spring 2027 date reported by USDOT is later than the original fall 2026 target. It is an expected opening, not a confirmed public-service date.

How much will it cost taxpayers?
The project was announced as 100% privately funded, with zero taxpayer investment, by the Tennessee Governor’s Office and The Boring Company in July 2025. Separately, USDOT reported a $200 million project cost on June 26, 2026. These are attributed statements about the project; they do not establish a final fare or provide a full accounting of future public costs.
The Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority’s February 2026 staff analysis considered a proposed 40-year underground license, with two five-year options. The Boring Company would obtain required permits and environmental approvals and pay operating and maintenance costs under the proposal. The analysis covered tunnels, portals, a passenger station, roadway connections, horizontal egress tunnels and hatches, as well as the possible Terminal II branch.

What is promised, and what remains unsettled?
Company and state claims
The July 2025 announcement described the Loop as an all-electric, zero-emissions system and said it could reduce surface traffic, preserve roads and provide predictable trips during events. The company also said the system would meet or exceed NFPA 130 fire and life-safety standards. That is a stated design commitment, not an independent finding that the Nashville system has completed safety certification or is compliant.
Questions raised by Nashville officials
A Metro Council resolution records objections that residents and local officials were not meaningfully consulted, and raises questions about safety, labor practices, environmental review, karst geology, sinkholes, flooding, accessibility and the effect of state-level control on local authority. The resolution also records that council members said several questions were not substantively answered at a February 2026 committee appearance.

The same resolution states that subcontractor Shane Trucking & Excavating walked off the project in November 2025, citing late payments and safety concerns. This is an allegation recorded in the council resolution, not an independently adjudicated finding.

Official materials available for the project do not establish an independent ridership forecast, final fares, passenger capacity, completed safety certification or a final environmental impact finding. The construction schedule, final route, accessibility details and long-term expansion plans may change.

How is the Loop different from ordinary public transit?
The planned service has a distinctive operating model: small Tesla vehicles with human drivers, direct trips and no intermediate stops. Bus and rail systems typically serve routes through stops, but the project materials cited here do not provide a complete, comparable study of capacity, accessibility, travel-time reliability, construction disruption, public oversight or operating cost. Without that comparison, claims that the Loop will outperform conventional transit on those measures cannot be verified from the published figures.
