In 2026, the NASCAR Cup Series championship postseason is The Chase: 16 drivers qualify by regular-season points, then score across the final 10 races. No one is eliminated in rounds, and the driver with the most points after the finale wins the title.
How does the 2026 NASCAR Cup Series playoff format work?
The season has a 26-race regular season followed by a 10-race Chase. The top 16 drivers in the regular-season points standings advance. NASCAR calls this championship format The Chase; it is distinct from the 2025 elimination-style playoffs.

All 16 drivers remain eligible throughout the Chase. A driver can fall so far behind that the championship is mathematically out of reach, but NASCAR does not eliminate drivers at round cutoffs. The title goes to the Chase driver with the most points after the season finale.

Qualification is based solely on regular-season points standings. A race win does not automatically secure a Chase berth under the 2026 rules. The field is set from the standings after the 26-race regular season.

NASCAR’s [The Chase 101] explains the current championship format. The separate In-Season Challenge is a midseason bracket competition, not a route into the championship Chase.
How does the points reset work?
NASCAR reseeds the 16 qualifiers once, after the regular season. The regular-season champion starts with 2,100 points, second seed with 2,075, third with 2,065, and each position thereafter drops by five points through 2,000 for 16th. The first-to-second gap is 25 points; the gap from second to third is 10.

| Chase seed | Starting points |
|---|---|
| 1st | 2,100 |
| 2nd | 2,075 |
| 3rd | 2,065 |
| 4th–16th | Five fewer points per position, ending at 2,000 for 16th |
These are the starting totals for the Chase, not a reset after every race. NASCAR says bankable playoff points are no longer part of the system.

In the 2026 Cup points system, a race win is worth 55 points. Second place earns 35, third 34, fourth 33, with each remaining finishing position descending by one point. Stage points remain 10 for first in a stage, nine for second, and one fewer for each position thereafter.

Because points accumulate across all 10 Chase races, both race finishes and stage results contribute to a driver’s total. There is no winner-take-all Championship 4 race.
What changed from the 2025 Cup playoffs?
The 2025 format divided 16 drivers into four rounds. Round cutoffs eliminated drivers, and the title was decided in a final Championship 4 race: the highest-finishing driver among the four finalists became champion. In 2026, the field is reseeded once before the Chase, there are no round eliminations, and the highest points total across the 10-race postseason wins.

NASCAR said its format review sought a larger championship sample, greater importance for each race, and recognition of consistency alongside winning. Those are NASCAR’s stated aims, not independently measured findings about fairness, audience response, or race quality. See the 2026 format announcement.

The format rules are set for the season, but standings and clinch status change after each race. NASCAR’s Cup Series standings page showed the season after Las Vegas on October 4, 2026, at Race 31 of 36, with the top 16 competing in the 10-race championship battle. That is a dated snapshot, not a guarantee of the current cutoff; check the standings page for the latest positions.
