NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) successfully ranged to India’s Vikram lander by firing laser pulses at a passive reflector on the lander and detecting the return. The Dec. 12, 2023 measurement, made from about 62 miles (100 kilometers) above the Moon near the south-polar Manzinus crater, demonstrated an orbiter-to-surface laser range measurement—not a laser communications link.
What happened on Dec. 12, 2023
LRO used its Lunar Orbiter Laser Altimeter (LOLA) to aim pulses at Vikram, the Chandrayaan-3 lander operated by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). Vikram carried a NASA Laser Retroreflector Array (LRA). Light returned from that array to LOLA, allowing the spacecraft team to confirm the target and measure the distance between the orbiter and the lander.
NASA placed LRO roughly 62 miles (100 kilometers) from Vikram during the attempt. ISRO reported that the observation took place during lunar night while LRO was ascending east of Chandrayaan-3, near the Moon’s south-polar region.
NASA characterized this as the first demonstrated laser transmission and reflection between an orbiting spacecraft and a landed device on the Moon. That wording is narrower than “the first laser bounce at the Moon”: Earth-based lunar laser ranging and other lunar laser experiments predate it.

How the laser ranging worked
A passive target, not a transmitter
Vikram’s LRA does not generate light, send data or require a battery. It contains eight quartz corner-cube prisms mounted in a dome-shaped aluminum frame. Each prism reflects incoming light back toward its source, even when the beam arrives at an angle.
ISRO reported the array’s mass at about 20 grams and said it was designed to remain useful for decades. NASA described the Vikram unit as about 2 inches (5 centimeters) wide—small enough that LOLA had to hit a very limited target area.

Distance from pulse timing
LOLA measured the return of the reflected pulses. Knowing the travel time of a pulse and the speed of light provides a range to the reflector. The result is a geodetic measurement: it helps establish where a surface marker is relative to the spacecraft’s orbit and the lunar reference frame.
Why it took eight attempts
LOLA was built primarily to map lunar topography, not to repeatedly point at an Oreo-sized object. Orbital motion, pointing uncertainty and the reflector’s tiny physical size made the geometry difficult. NASA said the team needed eight attempts before LOLA contacted Vikram’s reflector.

What the demonstration proved—and what it did not
Established capability
- An orbiting lunar spacecraft can detect a return from a reflector installed on a lander.
- A small, passive surface marker can provide a measurable range without power, maintenance or a radio link.
- Laser measurements can tie a landed asset to orbital observations and improve knowledge of its position.
Not laser communication
This was one-way pulse transmission followed by passive optical reflection. It did not carry a message, provide a broadband data link or demonstrate two-way laser communications between LRO and Vikram.
Not an operational lunar navigation network
NASA and ISRO identify future uses such as locating landers, determining spacecraft position, refining the lunar geodetic frame and supporting surface navigation. Those are capabilities the measurements could enable; the Vikram experiment did not by itself create a routine, global lunar navigation service.

Why retroreflectors matter for lunar exploration
A precisely located reflector acts as a durable reference point. Repeated ranges to several such points could improve lunar coordinate systems, help check spacecraft trajectories and provide an independent way to locate assets near difficult regions such as the south pole.

What later LRO results added
NASA Goddard’s Planetary Geodesy Data Archive reports successful LRO ranges to four lunar targets between February 2023 and December 2024: the Apollo 11 and Apollo 14 arrays, Chandrayaan-3’s miniature array and a miniature array carried by China’s Chang’e-6. The described study covered 42 orbital arcs over nearly two years.
| Result reported by NASA Goddard’s archive | Value | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Range accuracy | About 1.7 meters | Accuracy reported for the study’s measurements and analysis, not a guarantee for every future attempt. |
| Angular accuracy | About 0.023 degrees (roughly 400 microradians) | Reported pointing-related accuracy for that data set. |
| Orbital arcs analyzed | 42 | Observations spanning nearly two years, through December 2024. |
| Targets reached | Four | Apollo 11, Apollo 14, Chandrayaan-3 and Chang’e-6 reflector arrays. |
These later results put the Vikram contact in a broader technical program. They do not remove the targeting challenge: routine use requires better pointing, favorable geometry and enough reflected photons for reliable detection.
How this differs from Apollo-era lunar laser ranging
Apollo astronauts deployed large retroreflector arrays that are routinely targeted from observatories on Earth. The Vikram experiment reversed the geometry: the laser instrument was on a spacecraft orbiting the Moon and the reflector was on the surface. Vikram’s array is also much smaller than the Apollo installations, making acquisition more demanding.

The key advance is therefore not simply that a reflector returned light. It is that a lunar orbiter’s instrument designed for topographic mapping located and ranged to a miniature lander-mounted array from orbit.
Quick Recap
What to remember
- LRO’s LOLA instrument bounced laser pulses off a NASA reflector mounted on ISRO’s Vikram lander on Dec. 12, 2023.
- The spacecraft was about 100 kilometers away near the lunar south pole.
- Vikram’s eight-prism, roughly 20-gram LRA was passive; the event was laser ranging, not communications.
- Eight attempts were required because LOLA had to target a reflector only about 5 centimeters across.
- Later LRO work ranged to four lunar reflector targets and reported approximately 1.7-meter range and 0.023-degree angular accuracy for that study.
- The technique could strengthen future lunar geodesy and navigation, but a routine navigation network is still a developing capability.
