NASA’s spacesuit crisis is a readiness and resilience problem: it needs a new suit for Artemis Moon missions and another for spacewalks at the International Space Station (ISS), but development has slipped and NASA now relies on Axiom Space for both efforts. The ISS crew still uses existing spacesuits, but that equipment has exceeded its planned design life. NASA has reported substantial testing progress on its lunar suit; that progress is not the same as final qualification or flight readiness.

Why does NASA need two new kinds of spacesuit?

A spacesuit is a life-support system as well as protective clothing, and the demands of a lunar surface mission differ from those of a spacewalk in microgravity. NASA’s ongoing Extravehicular Mobility Unit (EMU) spacesuits support ISS operations. The EMU design dates to the Space Shuttle era, has exceeded its planned design life, and was not built for lunar surface work.

For Artemis surface operations, NASA needs a suit designed for the Moon. Axiom Space’s Axiom Extravehicular Mobility Unit (AxEMU) is being developed for that role. NASA’s program description says AxEMU is intended to accommodate at least 90 percent of the U.S. male and female population. Separately, NASA needs a next-generation suit for microgravity operations such as ISS spacewalks. These are related development efforts, not one suit simply serving both environments.

System or need Mission environment What the evidence establishes
Existing EMU ISS spacewalks in microgravity Still used by NASA astronauts; its design dates to the Space Shuttle era and has exceeded its planned design life. NASA, spacesuit program information.
AxEMU Lunar surface operations In development by Axiom Space; NASA reported ongoing testing and review in February 2026. That report does not establish flight readiness.
Next-generation microgravity suit ISS spacewalks A distinct need from the lunar surface suit; NASA’s development schedule has slipped, according to NASA’s Office of Inspector General (OIG), 2026.

How did NASA become dependent on one provider?

In 2022, NASA awarded contracts under its xEVAS program to Axiom Space and Collins Aerospace to provide spacesuit services. NASA’s stated commercial approach was to use industry capabilities and encourage a commercial market for these services. Under the model, NASA buys spacewalking services rather than owning the suits outright.

In 2024, NASA and Collins mutually agreed to remove Collins’ task orders after the company could not meet the ISS demonstration schedule. NASA OIG reports that NASA had spent $37 million on Collins’ efforts before the task orders were removed. The xEVAS contracts are valued at up to $3.1 billion; that is a ceiling, not evidence that NASA has spent the full amount.

With Collins no longer working on active xEVAS task orders, NASA OIG says NASA remains reliant on Axiom for both the lunar and microgravity suit efforts. The concern is not simply that there is one contractor: it is that schedule slippage in a developmental program now has no active second xEVAS provider to provide competition or a fallback path.

How far behind schedule are the suits?

NASA OIG’s 2026 audit judged the original demonstration targets—2025 for the lunar suit and 2026 for the microgravity suit—unrealistic. It assessed both suits as at least a year and a half behind schedule. The current plan and the OIG’s risk scenario are different kinds of dates:

Date or timing What it means Attribution and qualification
2025 lunar and 2026 microgravity Original demonstration targets NASA OIG judged these goals unrealistic in its 2026 audit.
Late 2027 Demonstration readiness in Axiom’s current plan Plan as reported by NASA OIG in 2026; not a completed demonstration.
2031 Possible demonstration outcome if testing follows historical averages NASA OIG’s modeled scenario in 2026, not a firm NASA or Axiom delivery commitment or a confirmed mission date.

These dates describe suit demonstrations and development risk, not a definitive Artemis launch schedule. NASA OIG’s finding signals a schedule concern; it does not establish that a particular mission must move to 2031.

Why did NASA OIG criticize the contract approach?

NASA OIG argues that firm-fixed-price, service-based contracts are poorly suited to developmental work. A firm-fixed-price arrangement puts a defined price on contracted work, while developmental systems can face design and testing problems that are difficult to resolve on a predictable schedule. The OIG also says NASA made risky decisions while pursuing provider competition and redundancy.

That is the auditor’s assessment of the acquisition model and its risks. NASA’s intended benefit was different: drawing on industry capability and encouraging a commercial market for spacesuit services. The Collins withdrawal shows the practical limitation of that strategy in this program: after its task orders were removed, Axiom became the remaining active xEVAS provider for both suit efforts.

What progress has NASA reported?

NASA’s February 12, 2026 update reported more than 850 hours of pressurized AxEMU testing with a person inside the suit, simulated lunar-gravity work, and completion of Axiom’s internal technical review. NASA said a NASA-led design sync review would assess readiness for final testing and delivery.

Those are meaningful development milestones, but they do not show that NASA has completed final testing, approved the design, or declared the suit ready for a mission. NASA program manager Lara Kearney described the goal as delivering “a safe, capable lunar spacesuit that will enable astronauts to explore the Moon’s surface.” That statement expresses NASA’s intent; it is not evidence of flight certification.

What does this mean for Artemis and ISS spacewalks?

For Artemis, the risk is that the lunar suit may not be ready on the schedule NASA needs for surface operations. For the ISS, the issue is continuity: NASA still conducts spacewalks using EMUs, but the legacy design has outlived its planned design life and NASA needs a next-generation microgravity capability. NASA OIG references the station’s planned 2030 decommissioning horizon, leaving a finite period in which to sustain spacewalk capability there.

The suit program is one important Artemis schedule risk, not a complete explanation for Artemis delays. The Government Accountability Office’s 2024 review discussed spacesuit design challenges, including emergency life-support requirements, alongside other challenges in Artemis development. The available evidence therefore supports concern about suit readiness and provider resilience, but not the claim that spacesuits alone determine when Artemis missions can fly.
