NAS hard-drive prices vary sharply by capacity, model, region and seller—and a drive that is not supported by your NAS can turn a bargain into an expensive mistake. NASdisks’ October 2026 US catalogue puts its typical NAS HDD at $44 per terabyte, up from $21/TB in July 2024, but that is a tracked sample, not a universal market price. Before you buy, check the exact drive part number against the compatibility information for your exact NAS model.

Why NAS hard-drive prices look unusually high

NASdisks reports that its typical NAS hard-drive price rose from $21/TB in July 2024 to $44/TB in October 2026, a stated increase of 114%. Those figures describe NASdisks’ own catalogue measure, not an official or all-market price index. Its October 2026 snapshot covers 41 NAS drives of 8 TB and larger; the site says it tracks the cheapest in-stock new Amazon offers and refreshes prices daily. Treat the figures as a dated US listing sample, not a quote you can expect from every retailer.

NASdisks attributes the roughly doubled prices to AI datacenter buildout absorbing hard-drive supply. That is the catalogue publisher’s explanation; the page does not independently establish that as the cause. See NASdisks’ price catalogue and confirm current listings before checkout.

Capacity changes the per-terabyte comparison

The same October snapshot shows why a headline average cannot tell you what a particular drive should cost: an 8 TB WD Red Plus was listed at $355 ($44.37/TB), a 12 TB Seagate IronWolf at $429 ($35.75/TB), and a 24 TB IronWolf Pro at $860 ($35.83/TB). These are volatile listing snapshots, not fixed prices or a like-for-like test. A lower cost per terabyte may require a much larger upfront spend, and your usable capacity depends on your chosen RAID or redundancy layout.

Check compatibility before comparing deals

Compatibility is specific to the NAS enclosure and the exact drive model, not just the brand or product family. Find the NAS manufacturer’s compatibility resource, select your enclosure model, and search for the complete drive part number and capacity. Check interface and any model-specific notes as well. Seagate likewise recommends checking the NAS vendor’s compatibility list before buying.

  1. Identify the NAS precisely. Record the manufacturer and complete enclosure model, including any revision or suffix.
  2. Identify the drive precisely. Use its full part number, capacity and interface from the product listing or manufacturer documentation; do not rely on a family name alone.
  3. Check the vendor list for that enclosure. Search the exact drive entry and read any capacity, firmware, bay or support caveats.
  4. Resolve uncertainty before paying. If the exact model is absent or the listing details do not match, ask the NAS vendor or seller rather than assuming a near-identical SKU is supported.
  5. Compare the final offer. Verify that the seller, region, warranty and return terms match your needs, then compare total cost as well as price per terabyte.

Synology’s compatibility list is model-specific. Synology says it does not guarantee compatibility even for listed products and may update the list at any time, so presence on a list is useful evidence, not a promise. Lists and support terms can differ by NAS maker; use the resource for your own enclosure.

Compare recording method and workload—not just capacity

A NAS drive should suit the enclosure and workload as well as fit the budget. Recording method and workload ratings are specification clues, not proof that a drive will last longer or outperform another model.

Keep region and price type in view

A manufacturer’s suggested retail price in one country is not directly comparable with a live US retailer listing. Seagate’s April 2026 German price list gives suggested retail prices including local VAT: IronWolf ST8000VNZ02 at €327.99, ST12000VNZ008 at €479.99, and IronWolf Pro ST12000NTZ01 at €566.99. A practical way to choose a NAS drive

  • Start with support: confirm the exact NAS and drive SKU in the NAS vendor’s compatibility resource.
  • Match the workload: check recording method and the manufacturer’s stated bay class and workload rating for the exact model.
  • Compare equivalent prices: use the same region, currency, seller type, capacity context and date; include shipping or tax where relevant.
  • Balance TB price against total spend: a larger drive may cost less per terabyte, but check your budget and the usable capacity of your planned array.
  • Verify warranty locally: warranty coverage can depend on exact product, sales region and seller, so read the terms for the offer in front of you.
