A “narrow gauge railroad steam-up” can mean very different things: a heritage railway event with full-size locomotives and train rides, or a gathering where enthusiasts operate small-scale live-steam models. The phrase does not identify one event or guarantee public admission. Check the organizer’s page for the scale, access rules, schedule, weather conditions, and any ticket or registration requirements.
What does “steam-up” mean?
Organizers use “steam-up” for events at different scales. At a heritage railway or railroad museum, it may describe full-size steam locomotives operating for visitors. In the model-railway community, it can mean a meet where participants run live-steam models on shared layouts. The event name alone does not tell you which format to expect.
Before planning a visit, look for four details: whether the trains are full-size or models, whether the public can attend, whether locomotives run or are displayed, and what the organizer requires for schedules, weather, tickets, or registration.

Colorado Crossings at the Colorado Railroad Museum in Golden, Colorado, illustrates the full-size format. The museum listed its 2026 event for May 16–17; those dates have passed. Its event page described operating coal-burning steam locomotives and vintage railroad equipment, including narrow-gauge locomotives Nos. 20, 315, and 491. Activities included train rides, historical presentations, cab tours, turntable demonstrations, and a book sale. The museum described No. 491 as “currently the largest coal-burning narrow gauge steam locomotive operating in North America.” That is the museum’s qualified claim; it is not an unqualified comparison of every narrow-gauge locomotive.
Public steam days: Nevada County Narrow Gauge Railroad Museum
The Nevada County Narrow Gauge Railroad Museum in Nevada City, California, describes a recurring public steam operation rather than a single large festival. Its visitor information says public steam operations take place on the second Sunday of each month from May through October, weather permitting. Seating is open and reservations are not required. The museum also lists docent-led tours of the museum, rail yard, and restoration shop. Check the museum’s official page for current hours and operating dates before traveling; weather can affect service.

Small-scale example: National Steamup Symposium in Lodi, California
The National Steamup Symposium is a model-scale live-steam gathering, not an event featuring full-size railroad locomotives. The organizer lists the 2026 symposium for October 7–11 at the Lodi Grape Festival Pavilion in Lodi, California. The page describes four days of operation on 45 mm (Gauge One) and 32 mm (0-gauge) layouts, alongside clinics and dealers.
The symposium is not open to the general public. Attendees need Steamer or Observer registration, and guests must visit a registered attendee. The organizer reports that recent editions have featured up to seven layouts, 14 loops, and more than 2,200 linear feet of rail; these are organizer-reported figures for the symposium, not general statistics about model railways. Because event logistics can change, consult the organizer’s National Steamup Symposium page before making plans.
