A 2019 laboratory study reported that a magnetic, spring-shaped carbon nanotube catalyst degraded polyethylene when activated with a persulfate oxidant. It is a promising chemical-treatment concept, not a demonstrated wastewater-plant process: the reported best removal took eight hours at 160°C, and practical scale-up and broad environmental safety remain unresolved.
How the nanotube catalyst is designed to work
The catalyst combines helical, nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes with manganese carbide nanoparticles encapsulated beneath the carbon layer. The spring-like shape was intended to improve mechanical robustness; the embedded particles give the material magnetic properties so it can, in principle, be recovered with a magnet after treatment.
The catalyst activates a persulfate oxidant, described in the report as polymonosulfate, to produce sulfate and hydroxyl radicals. Those reactive species attack plastic polymers. The concept therefore aims to do two jobs: chemically degrade plastic and make the catalyst recoverable. Magnetic recovery of the catalyst is a design feature, however, not proof that microplastics can be efficiently separated from treated wastewater.

What the experiment showed
The report describes laboratory tests on polyethylene pieces. After two hours, cracks were visible on polyethylene beads; debris underwent further degradation over several hours. These observations indicate degradation under the experiment’s conditions, but they do not establish complete breakdown, performance on every plastic polymer, or removal in a functioning wastewater treatment plant.
Chemistry World quoted chemical engineer Jesus Ojeda Ledo of Swansea University as saying the study’s best microplastic removal was achieved after eight hours at 160°C. Ledo questioned whether those conditions would be practical for real wastewater treatment. That figure is an expert-reported condition for the study’s best removal, not a validated operating specification for a treatment facility.

Why this is not yet a wastewater treatment process
Laboratory degradation is only one part of treating wastewater. A practical system would also have to handle variable water composition and flow, provide enough contact time, manage the energy required for heating, and reliably separate both the catalyst and remaining plastic material from the effluent. The report identifies microplastic separation and the cost of manufacturing carbon catalysts at scale as key development challenges.
Shaobin Wang summarized the scale-up problem: “The challenge for future applications is to further reduce the cost for large scale manufacture of the carbon catalysts and to find effective strategies to separate the microplastics from the water effluent.” External expert concerns also include treatment duration and energy demand. The reported experiments do not demonstrate that these obstacles have been solved or that the process has been deployed at a plant.

What the safety test can—and cannot—tell us
The report says researchers tested reaction filtrate with green algae and characterized the organic intermediates as environmentally benign in that assay. This is a limited toxicity test, not evidence that treated water is broadly safe for aquatic life or ecosystems. Ledo cautioned that wastewater ecosystems are more complex than a green-algae test and may require additional evaluation.
Before environmental safety could be established for real-world use, assessment would need to address the relevant organisms and conditions in wastewater ecosystems, along with what remains in the effluent after treatment. The report does not establish that level of evidence.

What would matter in evaluating future claims
A useful comparison with other microplastic-treatment approaches would need matched evidence on several points, rather than a single removal result:
- Operating conditions: treatment time, temperature and resulting energy demand.
- Plastic coverage and outcome: which polymer types were tested and how completely they were degraded.
- Separation and residues: whether catalyst and plastic particles can be recovered without adding secondary contamination.
- Environmental effects: toxicity testing across realistic wastewater conditions, beyond a limited algae assay.
- Scale and cost: catalyst manufacturing cost and performance in a full treatment system.
The 2019 report does not provide enough matched comparative data to rank this approach against alternatives.
