No. Nanoporous materials can adsorb methane, and a 2025 laboratory study reported graphene-coated porous carbon that retains it at ambient pressure and temperature. The harder problem is building a practical tank that can store and release enough gas reliably, including through repeated cycles and with real natural-gas mixtures. A promising material result is not yet proof of a vehicle-ready storage system.

What makes methane storage in nanoporous materials difficult?

Porous adsorbents hold methane on or within a material’s internal surfaces and pores. That can allow methane to be stored differently from conventional compressed natural gas (CNG), but a large maximum uptake is not enough to show that a material is useful.

Stored gas is not necessarily deliverable gas

A storage material must release methane as pressure falls. If it binds gas too strongly, some of the measured uptake may remain trapped rather than becoming available to the user. That is why deliverable capacity—the amount released over a specified charge-and-discharge pressure window—matters more than maximum uptake alone.

The volume basis changes the comparison

Capacity may be reported per mass of adsorbent, per volume of adsorbent, per adsorption chamber, or per complete vessel. These are not interchangeable: a tank must also accommodate the adsorbent and its container, and a low packing density can reduce the gas stored per unit of system volume.

What benchmark have researchers used?

A 2025 review in Advanced Materials reports a DOE/ARPA-E target of 263 cm³ STP of methane per mL of adsorption chamber at 298 K and 65 bar. The review describes this as corresponding to compressed methane at 250 bar. It also cites a gravimetric target of 0.5 g of methane per g of adsorbent. These are targets reported by the review, not proof that meeting one laboratory measurement would make a complete storage system viable.

The review reported that, as of its 2025 assessment, none of the rigid or flexible metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) it surveyed had met the cited deliverable-capacity target. It also notes that the material-only volumetric performance may need to exceed the chamber-level target because packing density affects how much adsorbent fits in a system.

What did the 2025 graphene-coated carbon study show?

A 2025 Nature Energy study, “Ambient pressure storage of high-density methane in nanoporous carbon coated with graphene,” reported a material-level result that challenges a blanket claim that methane cannot be retained in porous materials at ambient conditions. The researchers describe graphene as a thermally controlled barrier that can obstruct or activate pores.

For its graphene-coated porous carbon, the study reports a pressure-equivalent loading of 19.9 MPa at 298 K, a reversible volumetric capacity of 142 v/v, and methane retention at ambient pressure and temperatures below 318 K. The reported method releases methane by heating the material to 473 K.

Those figures describe the experiment, not independently validated vehicle performance. The study does not establish the performance of a complete tank at vehicle scale, its lifecycle over repeated use, manufacturing economics, or commercial availability. In particular, the heating step is part of the reported release method and should not be treated as equivalent to ordinary pressure-driven discharge.

Why can pure-methane capacity overstate real-world performance?

Natural gas is a mixture, not pure methane. A 2024 Journal of the American Chemical Society study tested a 95:5 methane–ethane mixture and found that ethane accumulated in the studied MOFs over repeated fill-and-empty cycles. Storage performance degraded, with the effect more pronounced in materials with smaller pore volumes.

Klein Tools ET120 Gas Leak Detector
  • WIDE DETECTION RANGE: Detect gas concentrations from approximately 50 to 10,000 ppm* (*based on Methane) for versatile gas monitoring
  • ADJUSTABLE SENSITIVITY: Choose between High (50 to 1000 ppm) and Low (1000 to 10,000 ppm) sensitivity levels for accurate gas detection
  • ENHANCED VISUAL AND AUDIBLE ALERTS: Stay alerted with five red LED's (visual) and 85dB audible alerts that intensify as gas concentration increases
  • EASY CALIBRATION: Automatic zero-point calibration at power-up ensures accuracy; flashing lights during self-calibration, no gas presence indicated
  • FLEXIBLE GOOSENECK DESIGN: Expand the sensor's reach with the 18-inch flexible gooseneck that conveniently clips onto the meter for storage

This is evidence about the materials and conditions studied, not proof that every porous adsorbent behaves the same way. It does show why a promising pure-methane result is not enough to predict performance with natural gas: mixture composition and cycling can affect how much methane remains deliverable.

How do the reported target and new result compare?

Measure Reported value What it describes
Volumetric deliverable-capacity target 263 cm³ STP/mL of adsorption chamber at 298 K and 65 bar DOE/ARPA-E target as reported by the 2025 Advanced Materials review; the review says it corresponds to compressed methane at 250 bar.
Gravimetric target 0.5 g methane/g adsorbent Target cited by the same 2025 review; this is a mass-based measure, not a chamber-volume measure.
Graphene-coated porous carbon result 142 v/v reversible volumetric capacity; pressure-equivalent loading of 19.9 MPa at 298 K Material-level experimental findings reported in the 2025 Nature Energy study. The measures use different bases and conditions from the review’s chamber-level target, so they are not a direct pass/fail comparison.

What other approaches are being explored?

MOFs and flexible frameworks

MOFs can be designed with different pore sizes and chemical environments for methane storage and gas purification. The 2025 review identifies pore-volume and pore-size optimization as continuing challenges; commercial application and flexible frameworks also remain active areas of work. The review’s finding about target performance is a 2025 assessment, not a permanent limit on future materials.

Adsorption combined with hydrate formation

A 2025 Langmuir study investigated methane storage by combining adsorption with hydrate formation in nanoporous materials containing preadsorbed water. The authors report that the processes can reinforce one another in some conditions but can also work against one another. They say the mechanism is not yet sufficiently understood for large-scale application, so this remains an early research direction rather than an established replacement for compressed or adsorbed gas storage.

Why hasn’t adsorbed natural gas replaced CNG?

Material-level performance is only one part of a storage system. A practical comparison must account for the charge and discharge pressure window, temperature, volume basis, packing density, natural-gas composition, repeated-cycle performance, and any heat needed to release gas. A high uptake number alone does not establish that a tank can deliver enough fuel conveniently and reliably.

The 2025 graphene-coated carbon finding makes ambient-condition methane retention plausible in a laboratory material. It does not, by itself, resolve the separate engineering questions of complete-vessel performance, durability, production, and cost that determine whether an alternative can compete with CNG in vehicles.
