Nanoparticle fertilisers may help control how nutrients are delivered to crops, but they are not yet proven to deliver reliable yield gains across field conditions. Their performance depends on the nutrient, formulation, crop, soil and application method. In particular, evidence does not support treating a small amount of nano-urea as a general replacement for conventional nitrogen fertiliser.
What are nanoparticle fertilisers?
“Nanofertiliser” describes a range of products and designs, not one standard ingredient or technology. Some contain nutrient particles at nanoscale; others use nanomaterials to carry or encapsulate nutrients, coat fertiliser, or create porous carriers intended to change nutrient release. Formulations may address macronutrients or micronutrients, and may be applied to soil, foliage, seed or another target.
That variety matters: the material, nutrient, formulation and delivery route can affect both performance and safety. Findings about one product cannot automatically be applied to every product labelled “nano”.

Why are they considered promising?
Some nano-enabled designs aim to release nutrients in a more controlled or targeted way. The proposed benefits include making nutrients more available near roots or leaves, improving uptake, and reducing losses such as leaching or volatilisation. Some formulations may also affect plant stress responses.
#1 Best Overall
- For more nutritious and tasty vegetables
- Optimum levels of primary plant nutrients
- Contains no GMOs, chicken manure or sewage sludge
- Feeds for several months
- Made with 100% organic and natural ingredients
These are plausible aims, not guaranteed results. A formulation’s behaviour may change with soil texture, pH and ionic strength, as well as the crop, application method and interactions with soil organisms. Faster dissolution or greater reactivity could, in some cases, increase nutrient losses instead of reducing them.
Do nanoparticle fertilisers work?
Some studies report benefits, but the overall evidence is not strong enough to establish dependable performance across crops and farms. A 2025 review in npj Sustainable Agriculture, “Review of research and innovation on novel fertilizers for crop nutrition,” reports that one synthesis found only nine studies examining nanofertiliser effects on crop growth under field conditions. The review also says field work has often focused on micronutrient formulations, while measurements of environmental effects in the field remain scarce.

A 2026 review in Nature Reviews Earth & Environment, “Nano-agrochemical use in sustainable agriculture and environmental protection,” describes nanoformulations as boosting crop yields by approximately 20%, largely through increased nutrient-use efficiency. That is a review-level estimate for nano-agrochemical formulations broadly, not a prediction for nanofertilisers alone or a promise of a particular result on a farm. The category covered includes nanopesticides as well as nanofertilisers.
The same 2026 review reports that nano-agrochemicals account for less than 1% of the global agrochemical market. This figure also applies to the broader category, including nanopesticides; it is not a market-share estimate for nanofertilisers alone.

- HOW TO APPLY: To apply, simply shake granules evenly on the soil, mix into the top 1-3 inches of soil in gardens or throughout the soil for potted plants, and water to start feeding
- COVERAGE: Approximately 3/4 - 1 cup of this organic plant food covers 20 sq. ft. of in-ground soil area, or 1 tbsp feeds one 6-inch potted plant
- ALL PURPOSE PLANT FOOD GRANULES: Miracle-Gro Organic All Purpose Plant Food grows healthier, more resilient plants (vs unfed plants, when used as directed)
- FOR OUTDOOR PLANTS: Use these garden fertilizer granules with most outdoor plants, including vegetables, flowers, annuals, and perennials growing in-ground or in containers
- FEEDS UP TO 3 MONTHS: This granular plant food feeds plants for up to 3 months and provides vibrant results in as little as 1 week (vs unfed potted plants)
Can nano-urea replace urea?
Not on the evidence described here as a general recommendation. The 2025 npj Sustainable Agriculture review discusses a controlled field trial in Punjab, India, conducted in soil without excessive background nitrogen. In rice and wheat, nano-urea applied alongside a reduced rate of conventional nitrogen fertiliser was associated with a 13–17% yield decrease. The review’s account says the small foliar nitrogen application did not make up for the larger nitrogen quantity supplied by granular fertiliser in that trial.
In the comparison described by the review, foliar dissolved urea and nano-urea produced no yield difference. That result did not demonstrate a distinct nanoparticle-driven “biostimulatory effect.” It is evidence from one trial and its specific crops, location and setup—not a universal finding about every nano-urea product, field or management system. It does, however, underline why a lower nutrient dose should not be assumed to work just because its delivery formulation is nano-enabled.

Are nanofertilisers safe for soil and food?
Safety depends on the particular material, formulation, dose, crop, soil and exposure. Potential concerns identified in the literature include the environmental fate of released nanomaterials, effects on soil microbiota, accumulation in plants and food chains, and phytotoxicity. A possible reduction in nutrient leaching does not by itself establish that the carrier or particle is harmless to soil or organisms.
There is not enough field environmental evidence in the cited reviews to make a blanket claim that nanofertilisers are safer or more sustainable than conventional fertilisers. The 2026 Nature Reviews Earth & Environment review identifies life-cycle evaluation and a globally harmonised assessment framework as research priorities. Regulatory approaches and monitoring also vary across agricultural regions, so the status of any named product needs to be checked against the applicable country’s rules and the product’s own label.

How to assess a nanoparticle fertiliser claim
When comparing products or studies, look for enough detail to judge whether the result applies to the crop and conditions in question. Useful questions include:
- What is the formulation? Identify the nutrient and whether it is a free nanoparticle, carrier, coating, encapsulated nutrient or composite. Distinguish macro- from micronutrients.
- What dose is being compared? Check the nutrient amount, conventional-fertiliser baseline and whether the treatments supply equal nutrient quantities. A formulation comparison is difficult to interpret if the nutrient doses differ.
- Which crop and conditions? Look for the crop species, soil texture and chemistry, pH, ionic strength, climate and any stress conditions reported.
- How is it applied? Note whether the treatment is foliar, soil-applied, seed-applied or delivered another way, and record timing and frequency.
- What was measured, and how strong was the study? Separate yield from nutrient uptake, nutrient-use efficiency and nutrient losses. Check for controls, replication and duration, and whether the work was conducted in a laboratory, greenhouse or field.
- What is known about environmental effects? Look for evidence on the material’s fate and transformation in soil and water, plant accumulation, food-chain exposure and effects on soil organisms. For a product, check its label and the rules in the relevant jurisdiction.
These details help distinguish a promising mechanism or early result from evidence that a formulation performs reliably in real growing conditions.
What the evidence supports today
Reviews describe several plausible ways nano-enabled fertilisers could improve nutrient delivery, and some studies report favourable outcomes. But limited field evidence, formulation-specific results and unresolved environmental questions leave important uncertainties. As the 2025 npj Sustainable Agriculture review puts it, “The impact of nanofertilizers on agronomic and environmental outcomes is still poorly understood.” Its conclusion is that field research is still needed before the technology can be considered ready for commercialisation on the basis of scientific performance evidence.
